Ever since we are little, we are taught to respect nature and protect it as much as we can. Growing up, we are instructed (if that can be said) that being green does not mean disrespecting nature; on the contrary, we must understand what green philosophy is and try to apply some general rules. Fortunately, many books have been written on this theme and one of the greatest writers of all times is Masanobu Fukuoka. There is nothing that can be compared to reading one of his books and definitely ‘The Natural Way of Farming’ is an amazing example.

Just like any of the books by Masanobu Fukuoka, ‘The Natural Way of Farming’ keeps the reader hooked for every page because of the sincerity and real information presented. Trained as an agriculture specialist, Masanobu Fukuoka has returned to traditional farming, being unimpressed with the means of advanced agriculture and certainly not happy with its consequences. He has chosen a simple way of life, devoting many of his years to teaching others about the essentials of being green and showing them the connection between man and nature.

His wise words come from spending a lot of years in the agricultural field, noticing the devastating impact humanity has had on nature. ‘The Natural Way of Farming’ is part of a series of carefully-written books by Masanobu Fukuoka, destined to revive traditional farming methods and reduce the strong (not necessarily positive) influence of industrialism. Civilization might stand on the highest peak right now but that is not valid for agriculture and nature in general. The lack of self-awareness had led to many unfortunate decisions regarding ecology, staying green being just a dream for most people. They needed the help of a motivational writer like Masanobu Fukuoka, showing the way farming should develop.

Each page from ‘The Natural Way of Farming’ is filled with rich information regarding the modern world. We have practically suffocated the earth with so many fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, suffering in the end from the consequences of our actions. It is kind of sad that we cannot being to picture how traditional agriculture could help us but there is a time for everything and that is what Masanobu Fukuoka is trying to teach us. Nature has blessed us with many gifts and it is up to us to protect them; natural farming is all about having a splendid soil, rich crops and all kept at a normal level, reducing not only the impact we have on nature but also the general costs in the agrarian field.

Reading any of the books by Masanobu Fukuoka provides useful insight about one of the most important things in life: balance. Being an organic farmer himself, Masanobu Fukuoka tries to show us that we have taken the agriculture industry one step too far, forgetting the values of natural farming and affecting nature in an almost irreversible way. We still have a chance to cut back some of the damage done so far and discover how great crops can be obtained from healthy fields; that is basically the essence of ‘The Natural Way of Farming’ and the other books as well.

As gardeners, farmers or agricultural specialists, it’s time that we take a look at agriculture and return to traditional farming. Masanobu Fukuoka’s books are a great way to start, containing plenty of useful and interesting information for green enthusiasts. The photos, technical drawings and many tables inserted are meant to make the whole book even more attractive, discovering the truth about natural farming and its many benefits. For all those out there interested in books by Masanobu Fukuoka, the Internet seems to be a pretty good resource; build up your courage and search for them online as soon as you decide that you want to be green!

Tenant farmers need farm to work/live
By: Ray | 20-07-2008
My husband and I are tenant farmers looking for another farm to live and work on.  Our present living conditions are being modernized and we are no longer needed.  Everything is going automated.  We need another farm to work and live on.  We have little or no money to speak of because of recent surgery bills.  We live in York County and my husband has a job in a foundry in Hanover.  He works Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at his job and has the rest of the week to work on the farm.  He is a maintenance mechanic and can repair just about anything.  We have a total of 10 years experience with livestock and I have 18 years of raising our own calves.  We need help ASAP.  We can help to save someone's farm because of lack of help.  Please write us at:  rohlerheifers@aol.com
