Jillian Kramer has been studying vitamin herbs and other natural supplements since completing her postgraduate education in pharmacology in 2002. She has published numerous features on the use of native plants in medicine by indigenous populations since then. Jillian is currently touring the US, speaking with supplement retailers, including those carrying life brand vitamins , in an attempt to raise medical awareness of herbal supplements.
What do you know about herbal supplements? If you’re like most Americans, it is probably not a whole lot. You may have heard of ginseng- that one has popped up in the news in the past few years. There are now hundreds of companies marketing ginseng products that are claimed to help fight stress, reduce fatigue, protect against colds and flu and possibly boost memory. Generally speaking though, the majority of people are more or less in the dark about herbal supplements.
I’ve spent a considerable amount of time researching herbs and plant extracts and how they’ve been used for medicinal purposes by various cultures over the centuries and it really is a fascinating topic. What amazed me was the number of common medications that had their roots (no pun intended) in herbal remedies. A classic example is Aspirin. We all recognize Aspirin and its medical value, but few people realize that an extract of essential oils from the Birch tree is nearly 95% pure methyl salicylate; a substance that in its synthesized form comprises the primary ingredient of Aspirin. So, if Aspirin could be derived from Birch trees (and there’s historical anecdotes about Native Americans doing just that), what other herbal remedies are out there that might be of interest?
Many guys think nothing of dropping hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on concoctions to prevent thinning hair and baldness. Instead of dropping that kind of cash, why not try relatively cheap herbal supplements formulated to combat hair loss? I know of an herbal blend composed of Rosemary, Juniper berries, White Willow bark, Watercress and several other plants that are formulated to help prevent hair loss. It may work for you and it may not; but at just over six bucks a bottle, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than Rogain, so you hardly have anything to lose in trying it. Or how about Red Yeast Rice? Taking two capsules once or twice per day has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol (that’s the ‘bad’ cholesterol) in many patients and you can pick up a bottle of 120 capsules at an online health food store for less than fifteen dollars. And here’s one that’s bound to appeal to the pet owners. You know how much pet medications cost, especially when you have to order through your vet. Following the old ‘ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ adage, you can also buy herbal supplements that help many common pet afflictions, including hairballs, skin conditions, stress, issues with joints and bad breath
