Today, it is not uncommon to see children suffering from depression or other mental disorders. Many doctors today will prescribe medication, such as Paxil to help improve the child's mental health disorder or condition. However, what many people do not know is that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has never approved treatment or use of Paxil for children. The FDA does not regulate medical procedures and a doctor can prescribe a medication for children based solely on their professional knowledge and judgment.
Childhood depression differs greatly from adult depression, therefore children taking Paxil, may experience different side effects, sometimes at a higher degree than adults, as a result of taking Paxil. There are the things that you should know in regards to children and Paxil.
One of the things that is very important to know is that the FDA has warned that the use of Paxil in young children and teenagers can increase their thoughts of suicide and violence. It was researched and reported that children who took Paxil were two to three times more likely to have suicidal thoughts and increased chances of committing a violent action. Other side effects related to Paxil use by children included weight gain, insomnia, and withdrawal symptoms after the use of the Paxil had ceased.
The withdrawal symptoms were likely to begin in as little as a few hours after stopping the medication because Paxil is a very addicting medication, especially in children under eighteen years old. Paxil side effects can vary depending on the child, but nevertheless, the Paxil side effects are enough to cause harm or death to children who take Paxil for any number or mental related reasons. It is because of these Paxil side effects in children that the FDA has not approved the use of Paxil medication by patients younger than eighteen years of age.
There are also several lesser Paxil side effects that are increased in children such as tremors, insomnia, nausea, sweating, dizziness, dry mouth, and asthenia. Therefore, if your child is taking Paxil and you notice any of these symptoms, you should contact a medical expert immediately and you should contact a legal professional who specializes in Paxil lawsuits and claims.
However, if your child has been hurt by the Paxil side effects or by taking Paxil, then you should consult an attorney right away. Most doctors know that Paxil for children is not recommended and not approved by FDA, but continue to prescribe it anyway based on their professional medical judgment. Sometimes, this judgment may not be as it seems and your child could be severely injured, or even die as a result of taking the Paxil medication.
