Tips For Quitting Smoking Naturally

You are among the growing number of smokers who are looking for chemical-free ways to help them quit smoking. These tips for quitting smoking naturally without NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) will show you how to adjust your thinking and attitude, and quit smoking.

Having made the decision to quit, it is now important that you change how you think about the habit of smoking. You will have certain old beliefs in your subconscious that support your smoking habit; you need to weed these out and replace them with new ideas about being a non-smoker.

Sit quietly on your own with a pen and paper and think about why you smoke. Jot down your thoughts. Then think about why you have decided to stop smoking. List your reasons and then think of the benefits you are going to experience when you quit. Put every point in favor of quitting in the positive - "I will be able to breathe much easier when I quit smoking."

It is important to your success to keep referring to your list of reasons to quit several times a day. Keep a copy with you and in all the places where you kept cigarettes in the past. Read your list whenever you think of it, when you feel like having a cigarette and before you go to sleep - your subconscious will work on your goal to quit smoking while you are asleep.

Plan ahead for the times when you know you will feel like having a cigarette. Carry some nuts with you to nibble on, have some fruit juice handy or a container of dried or fresh fruit pieces. When you would have had a smoke break at work, go for a 10 minutes walk out in the fresh air. You will feel refreshed and invigorated to return to your work. Make your alternative to cigarettes a healthy choice rather than depending on candy or fast food.

Forming a new habit takes 30 days of consistent activity, so don't expect changes overnight. If you slip, be kind to yourself, review your reasons for quitting and move on. If you find that you are struggling through your day, have just one cigarette to get you through. This is not a sign of weakness; it is just a coping mechanism.

Few people quit smoking without some symptoms of withdrawal from nicotine. Heavy smokers might have more success if they start with a 2 week cutting-down time before quitting. Cut your cigarette intake by 10% every day for 2 weeks and you will be well on the way to quitting for good. During this time, review your reasons and benefits as if you had already quit, and use positive statements to help change your attitude to smoking.

You don't have to do this alone; find a support group or counseling service so you have someone to talk to. Take on a new interest to keep your mind occupied, get involved in extra physical activity and make sure you eat a healthy, balanced diet. Consider learning some stress-relieving activity like yoga, tai chi or meditation to give you strategies to cope with the withdrawal.

These tips for quitting smoking naturally will help you go through the quitting process and break the habit of smoking. You will start to feel healthier and more in control of your life by taking positive actions like those suggested in this article.
