What is Otoplasty Surgery?

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. For the most part, the operation is done on children between the ages of four and 14. Ears are almost fully grown by age four, and the earlier the surgery, the less teasing and ridicule the child will have to endure. Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and there are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an older patient.

Who is a candidate for Otoplasty Surgery?

The procedure can be performed on either children (as young as 2 years of age) or adults. In children with severely prominent ears, the procedure is done early in life between ages 2-5 years. In children with more minor deformities, the family may wish to wait until the child can participate in the decision at approx age 7-10.

The procedure of Otoplasty Surgery:

Ear surgery usually takes about two to three hours, although complicated procedures may take longer. The technique will depend on the problem.

With one of the more common techniques, the surgeon makes a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. He or she will then sculpt the cartilage and bend it back toward the head. Non-removable stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape. Occasionally, the surgeon will remove a larger piece of cartilage to provide a more natural-looking fold when the surgery is complete.

Another technique involves a similar incision in the back of the ear. Skin is removed and stitches are used to fold the cartilage back on itself to reshape the ear without removing cartilage. In most cases, ear surgery will leave a faint scar in the back of the ear that will fade with time. Even when only one ear appears to protrude, surgery is usually performed on both ears for a better balance.

What to Expect after otoplasty:

With straight local anesthesia patients can walk right out of surgery. Both adults and children are usually up and around within a few hours after general anesthesia or sedation. The large dressing provides protection for the ear sculpting. Although it is taped in place, be careful not to let it slip off of your head.

There is not much discomfort after ear otoplasty surgery unless patient traumatizes the ears. A little soreness, aching, or throbbing should easily be managed with some medication and last only a few days. Within a few days, the big dressing will be changed. Patient will need a broad headband that covers the ears gently. This dressing is especially important at night to protect the ear repairs. Sutures if not dissolvable are usually removed in about one week. Doctor will instruct when patient will be able to wash his hair, in most cases this will be possible once the formal ear dressings are no longer needed. Patient may need some help to minimize trauma to the ears. Patient will have to be careful of hot hair blow dryers and protect any possible numb areas from getting burned.

Why should one go for Otoplasty Surgery to India?

Most Important Reason to do so is that the cost of the Otoplasty Surgery is very low in India-almost 20% of the cost of what one would pay in USA, Canada or UK.

A new horizon of the medical field cropping out in India is cosmetic surgery, which utilizes some of the state of the art techniques in corrective procedures. Some disfigurations corrected include hair restoration (hair implants, hair flaps, and scalp reductions), rhinoplasties (reshaping or recon touring of the nose), and otoplasty for protruding ears, chin and cheek enlargement, lip reductions, various types of breast surgery package and reconstruction and liposuction. To be true to the ubiquitous goings on one have to admit that India is no longer a historical attraction hunch but has emerged as one of most competitive and up to date technology based solution to all medical quandaries.

The major sector of the growth in medical tourism in India has been in the area of cosmetic surgery, where prices still remain very high in Europe and the US. In fact, cosmetic surgery costs of some treatments can be between 50 - 90% cheaper than in the US or Europe. The cosmetic and reconstructive surgery industry in India is growing due to, the combination of lower costs, the expertise of medical staff, combined with the latest medical techniques and equipment.

Significant cost differences exist between U.K. and India when it comes to medical treatment. India is not only cheaper but the waiting time is almost nil. This is due to the outburst of the private sector, which comprises of hospitals and clinics with the latest technology and best practitioners. One of the key surgeries for which patients opt for Medical Tourism is Cosmetic Surgery, and what superior place to get this done than India. Advantages include low cost, no waiting lists and a high-class holiday.
