About 15% children in the age group of 5-15 years sleepwalk. This problem is also called Somnabulism. It is from the family of disorders referred to as parasomnias. Sleep talking is also related to this family of disorders. Parents should not take sleepwalking of children lightly and instead refer to a doctor who can advise causes and remedies associated with this disorder.
A large majority of people actually relate sleepwalking in children to other serious disorders but this needs to be investigated. Some reasons may be a disturbed sleep cycle, fever at night, tremors, bedwetting, noisy room, fight with a friend or sibling etc. sleepwalking in children is more common in boys than in girls.
Sleepwalking in children is a cause of concern for parents and caregivers because in such episodes the children sleepwalking are actually sleeping and are unaware of their surroundings and may hurt themselves. Children sleepwalking generally do not make any noise and may roam around the house, eat, dress up and may also unbolt the door and walk out of the house. There is a good possibility of such episodes being unnoticed by anyone in the house. The brain is actually in deep sleep while some parts are awake and the children sleepwalking may seem awake because their eyes are open but in reality they are also sleeping and non alert.
Certain precautions are suggested for parents and caretakers of sleepwalking children like keeping the bedroom and house clutter free, hide all sharp objects or anything that can hurt the child. Alarms and bells can be used to alert adults in the house. Doors and windows should be locked at night. It is also advised that the children sleepwalking should not be awaken in such an episode as it may scare them and they may cry, they should be guided to their rooms and made to sleep again. If possible the sleepwalking children should be made to sleep in the ground floors of the house.
