Ultrasonic Vs. Tumescent Liposuction

Are you considering liposuction? At most cosmetic surgery offices, both tumescent and ultrasonic liposuction are offered. Both types use a narrow instrument called a cannula to break up fatty tissue and remove it from the body through small incisions.

Tumescent liposuction

In tumescent liposuction, the area to be treated is first injected with a saline solution that contains a local anesthetic. The saline swells the fatty tissue and makes it firm, helping the cosmetic surgeon determine the most important areas for fat removal.

Ultrasonic Liposuction

In ultrasonic liposuction, the cosmetic surgeon uses a cannula that emits ultrasonic energy. As the cannula moves through fatty areas, the ultrasonic energy liquefies fat cells, which are then removed. Fibrous areas of the body, such as the back, are suitable for this procedure.

Regardless of the technique, fatty tissue is immediately reduced, and the final stunning results of your liposuction procedure can be fully enjoyed three to six months following treatment.

Liposuction Recovery

For the first 72 hours after tumescent liposuction, fluid drainage from the incisions will be released via a small drainage tube inserted under the skin. Patients are fitted with an elastic garment to wear for the first few weeks to assist in keeping the swelling down and allows the skin to adjust to its new contours.

Antibiotic and pain medication are prescribed to reduce post-operative discomfort and control pain and prevent infection. Most patients can walk around shortly after surgery and can return to work and other activities within a few days. Stitches are generally removed within ten days. Any remaining swelling and bruising subsides within three weeks. Full recovery from a liposuction procedure can take four weeks to six months, depending on the extent of liposuction performed.
