Validate your coding knowledge with a certification

Medical coding is one of the fastest growing professions in the US. Coding professionals are found in every corner of the healthcare industry right from physician offices to large hospitals. Many coders also work for insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies.

Medical coders require intimate knowledge of healthcare industry. As such, coders need to attend classes in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Many employers require their coders to be certified, which calls for a two-year’s associate degree and passing a written examination. A certification will tell your prospective employers that you have at-least entry level competency.

To add a certification to your name, you can turn to American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), which provides medical coding certification programs.

If you are looking at the best medical coding certification programs, think about what is best for you. You can choose from a plethora of medical coding certification options – CPC, CPC-H or other specialty credentials.

A medical coding certification program like CPC increases the accuracy of coders. A CPC-H certification makes you proficient in assigning correct medical codes for diagnoses, procedures and services performed in the outpatient setting.

You can also go for specialty certifications like Ambulatory Surgical Center (CASCC) General Surgery (CGSC), Anesthesia and Pain Management (CANPC), Orthopaedic Surgery (COSC), Gastroenterology (CGIC), among others. In total, AAPC provides 19 specialty credentials which are standalone certifications and does not require you to be CPC or CPC-H certified. These certifications are very helpful in that they validate coder’s knowledge in a specialty.

When you have a certification at hand, you’ll realize how your coding career takes a turn for the better.
