What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a sensation that everything around you is spinning or moving, which is usually caused by a problem in the inner ear, but can also be caused by vision problems. Vertigo is medically different from dizziness, lightheadedness, and unsteadiness. "Vertigo" is often used, incorrectly, to describe the fear of heights, but the correct term for this is acrophobia. The medical term vertigo can occur at any time and may last for days, weeks, months, and even years, while acrophobia symptoms only occur only when the person is high up and looking down. However, vertigo is so commonly used 'incorrectly' by lay people that it would be naive today to say it only has one meaning.
When you feel that the room is spinning around you, or in other words you sense that the objects around you are whirling horizontally or vertically, you have vertigo. In effect, one might feel that he himself is in an irregular whirling motion of some sort.
Vertigo is a disease which is often incorrectly confused with dizziness. It is actually related to problems in the inner ear, where the balance centers are located, although this is not the only reason.
Usually, vertigo clears on its own without any treatment. It may otherwise go within weeks or months with treatment, or it may continue for years.
It may also be symptomatic of some other serious conditions such as Ménière’s disease or multiple sclerosis, in which case, there is need for their own set of treatments.
What are the symptoms of Vertigo?
The patient may feel that his/her surroundings seem to be moving either vertically or horizontally. There may also be a sensation of spinning. Sometimes the feeling may be so slight that it is hardly noticeable. However, for some people the severity of symptoms makes it hard to keep balance and carry out everyday tasks.
In most cases you will find different symptoms like loss of balance, Nausea, Vomiting, Light-headedness. The patient might have visual disturbances, weakness, difficulty speaking, decreased level of consciousness, and difficulty walking.
What are the causes of Vertigo?
The vertigo can be caused by a problem with the balance mechanisms of the inner ear, a problem with the brain, or a problem with the nerves that connect the brain to the middle ear.
Vertigo, or dizziness, usually results from a disorder in the peripheral vestibular system (i.e., structures of the inner ear). Dizziness also may occur as a result of a disorder in the central vestibular system (i.e., vestibular nerve, brainstem, and cerebellum). In some cases, the cause of vertigo is unknown.
How to Cure Vertigo With Herbal Remedies?
Natural remedies can also provide symptomatic relief of dizziness and nausea associated with vertigo and improves inner ear balance. Herbal remedies containing homeopathic ingredients may be taken at the first sign of symptoms and are safe to use for people of all ages.
The most commonly recommended herbs today are the blood-moving and antioxidant herbs ginkgo and hawthorn. Patient's with Meniere's disease should limit salt in their diet.
Homeopathic ingredients such as Cocculus indicus, Lobelia inflata and Gelsemium have proven to highly effective in relieving the symptoms of dizziness, weakness, fainting, fatigue, headaches and emotional upsets. In addition, Bryonia alba may be beneficial for headaches, and for individuals who perspire where the slightest movement may be disturbing.
