Ways To Beat Stress

A friend of mine (who is a smoker) once told me that a "puff" of smoke or smoke break outside would help to put his weary mind in peace and took a step back from the hectic pace of the office. He works in a high rise building and will go all the way down outside his office lobby to have a smoke break at least 2 or 3 times a day.

Well, that's his way to manage stress. But for me personally, there are better and healthier ways to reduce stress and recharge our minds. Here are 4 ways you can use to beat your stress.

Meditation: Practiced for thousands of years in many Asian cultures, meditation has long been recognized as one of the most powerful tools we have for cultivating peace of mind and balance. Numerous studies have proven the incredibly positive effect that meditation has on stress reduction. There are literally hundreds of meditation techniques taught around the world. For beginners, the most helpful approach is to start with basic mindfulness techniques that develop both relaxation and alertness. Once a basic ground of awareness has been stabilized, then more advanced meditation practices can be undertaken.

Stop gossiping. Ouch! This one is going to hurt a little, but the pay-off is big. When you gossip, you are telling the person you are gossiping to that you will do the same thing when he/she is not present. You also have the added stress of keeping straight who you have told what. Gossip really adds up to appearing (and being) untrustworthy. Not the best trait to cultivate as a co-worker!

Downward Facing Dog Pose - Calms Your Mind and Relieves Mild Depression or Agitation

If you own a dog you know where the name of this exercise comes from. Each time your dog gets up from a rest he takes pleasure in this luxurious stretch -- you can do the same thing. Begin this pose on your hands and knees and then lift your knees from the floor. Straighten your knees but don't lock them and lift your tailbone towards the ceiling. Maintain the pose for several breaths, or even longer. You can stay in this pose for up to five minutes if it feels comfortable.

Take a walk in a pleasant area. Even if you don't think your neighborhood is the greatest, you can probably find a suitable place a short ride or drive away. Take a brief detour to it, to or from work. Or, if that's not possible, just walk around and pick out some nice things to notice right where you are. Walking is a great fat-burner, and a pleasant environment is an unbeatable stress-buster.

Physical activities such as sports will help your body to produce more endorphins; these are known as "feel-happy" hormones which are released when we do exercise. They help calm our nerves and reduce stress. There are so many activities you can do such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming, roller-blading, etc. Just pick your favorite. For me personally, best time to exercise is between 6:30PM to 7:30PM (after my work and before my dinner time at 8PM). If you can't manage to spare time in the late afternoon; then the best alternative is early in the morning before you start work.

Snuggle With Your Spouse - Yes, snuggling up on the bed or couch with a spouse is a great idea. You don't need any talking, but if so feel free to open up and talk about the things that make you happy.

Go Play Games With Family Members - Take some time to play games with family members and just have a great time. Play paintball, soccer, volleyball, golf or maybe an indoor card game. If you are playing with children feel free to let them win a few rounds.
