Presbyopia is not actually a disease, but an unpreventable, age-related condition that affects vision. If you’ve ever had to hold printed material at arm’s length to read it, you know how presbyopia feels. Presbyopia generally begins to affect people as they reach age 40 and beyond, and occurs because the eye’s lens begins to thicken and become less flexible, altering your ability to focus sharply.

Symptoms of presbyopia include:

• Difficulty seeing contrasts between small bits of text
• A need for increased lighting when reading or doing close work
• Eyes that feel tired or strained after short periods of reading

Treatments for presbyopia include:

• Wearing glasses, particularly bifocals or reading glasses
• Wearing contact lenses
Laser vision correction surgery

In cases where bifocals or reading glasses are not a solution, contact lenses may offer relief. Multifocal contact lenses work like bifocals. Monovision lenses adjust one eye for distance vision and the other eye for closeup vision. Some individuals have difficulty adjusting to monovision.

LASIK is a vision correction surgery that offers hope for many sufferers of presbyopia. LASIK can achieve a monovision result with the CustomVue Monovision procedure. However, FDA-approved conductive keratoplasty, also known as CK, uses radiofrequency energy to reshape the cornea. The actual LASIK surgery procedure lasts just three minutes and offers a 98% success rate.

To find out if you have presbyopia, you will need a basic eye exam with a board certified ophthalmologist. Your eye doctor will probably prescribe nonprescription reading glasses, prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. If you are already wearing glasses or contacts, your eye doctor may discuss your surgical treatment options.
