With the many different types of cosmetic procedures available to individuals today, it is important to have an understanding of what each type is for and who can benefit from it. It is much easier for a patient to discuss potential types of cosmetic procedures if that patient goes into his or her doctor’s office with some general knowledge of the procedures. This knowledge can help to alleviate fear and doubt and keep a patient from being nervous.
What is Dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion is a process where a person’s skin is actually planed to even the skin tone. This is done many times by first freezing the skin that the procedure will be affecting then the skin is essentially sanded away. This is done by using a diamond wheel or wire brush. A person can have this done on many parts of his or her body, but it is generally done to the face.
What is Dermabrasion Used For?
Dermabrasion is used for improving the appearance of skin by reducing the appearance of acne scars and fine lines (mainly around the mouth). It can also to a lesser extent be used to treat other scars and wrinkles. The dermabrasion procedure essentially sands away a person’s skin so that new, healthy skin can grow in its place.
Who Should Consider This Procedure?
Any person who has minor scars from acne or who would like to reduce fine lines around the mouth may be a good candidate for this procedure. A person with minor scarring may also benefit from dermabrasion. However, a patient with deep scarring or burn scars would likely find a different procedure more to his or her benefit.
What to Expect
Going into a doctor’s office knowing what to expect can make a patient less-nervous and anxious. What a person should expect from a dermabrasion procedure will depend on what exactly that person is having done. However, there are some basic things a person can expect.
First of all, a local anesthetic is applied to the area that will have the dermabrasion. If the dermabrasion is going to be particularly deep the patient may be given general anesthetic. Each affected area will then be cooled using ice packs or a freezing spray. Once the area is cooled the dermabrasion procedure will take place where the rotating instrument will slough off layers of skin.
The recovery time will vary depending on how deeply the dermabrasion was done and how large of an area it was done to. Most patients will gain their normal skin tone after a week or two. Until that time the skin will be pink or red, but it can be covered with make-up.
