The origin of chiropractic dates back to thousands of years. The first mention of chiropractic can be traced as back as 2700 BC in a Chinese manuscript. The philosophy of Leonardo Da Vinci on the relationship between structure and functioning of human body has bestowed a deep impression on the progression of this medical practice. Human body is accomplished with a self-healing capability and its structure affects its functioning as well as the total health.
Chiropractic simply detects, prevents and heals the imbalance between the relationship of body structure and body function. Thus it restores and retains perfect health.
With the passing of time, the alliance between the scientific medical methodologies and chiropractic has successfully evolved various advanced techniques for the utmost benefit of the patients. Manipulation under Anesthesia or MUA is such a Complimentary and Alternative Medicine or CAM technique that helps to apply chiropractic most efficiently. The neuromusculoskeletal approach of the chiropractors has developed a new philosophy and class in itself known as ‘mixers’ against the ‘straights’, more conventional and principle-based practitioners.
Manipulation under Anesthesia works as the most functional alternative in an outside set-up of hospitals, and in cases where the patient has stopped responding to other forms of treatments. The failure of MUA is 0% till now. Ever since the 1930’s an abundance of positive research has been completed showing the clinical efficacy of the procedure itself, its popularity and applicability is highly growing.
Robert Mensor, an orthopedic surgeon, has proved that 83% of MUA patients have received effective results. Donald Chrisman, another orthopedic surgeon, has also reported that 51% patients with indisputable disc lesions were having good health even after three years of the MUA. A 1998 study on 177 patients has showed that 68.9% of patients returned to normal life some times after MUA treatment.
Manipulation under Anesthesia should be considered as a strong treatment option by every chiropractor. The main reasons for this are –
- MUA lowers the risk of muscle spasm, and thus it allows easy spinal movement, while applying manipulation.
- MUA demurs the nerves that can react to the sharp pain caused by the dysfunctional spine.
- MUA further relaxes the muscle extremely well, allowing the chiropractor to extend and elongate muscles and reduce fibrotic scar tissue.
However, before performing an MUA, it is suggested that the patient undergo medical clearance by various tests line SMA 6, EKG, Chest X-ray, CBC blood examination, MRI, CT, pregnancy test and other tests if necessary. The patient should also be guided with complimentary exercise and lifestyle advices.
