Mount Pleasant police said that they had three reports on Monday of aggressive raccoons in the area of Coleman Boulevard. The first incident happened at the Charleston Harbor Hilton Marina, the second on Provincial Circle (Patriot’s Province), and the the third incident was reported at Harbor Point apartments. Police say at the Marina a man was approaching the dock entrance from a gravel lot, when an aggressive raccoon came out from near some trash cans. He told police the raccoon chased him up the dock where he fell down and the raccoon jumped on top of him. He suffered injurries on his left hand. The second victim Tami Barlow, Patriot’s Province, was sitting on the steps by her driveway when a raccoon came around her car and charged her leg. She struggled with the animal digging into here thigh before wriggling out of her pants and free of the raccoon’s grip. Barlow spent 2 hours in the emergeny room receiving several shots as precautions against rabies. Raccoon’s are normally only active at night and the attack happened in broad day light around 11:30 am Sunday. The third incident was reported at Harbor Point apartments, the raccoon was observed by it did not approach the person who filed the complaint. Animal Control Officers are taking steps to capture aggressive animals. That includes setting traps and increasing patrols in the areas of the sightings. Police ask you to report any wildlife that is acting aggressive or in an unusual manner.

The raccoon, sometimes spelled as racoon, and also known as the common raccoon, North American raccoon, northern raccoon and colloquially as coon, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. As a result of escapes and deliberate introductions in the mid-20th century, raccoons are now also distributed across the European mainland, the Caucasus region and Japan. Their original habitats are deciduous and mixed forests, but due to their adaptability they have extended their range to mountainous areas, coastal marshes, and even urban areas, where some homeowners consider them pests.
