The word Yotsume toji simply means four holes. So this is a four hole binding technique which even a small kid can do. Some steps in this bookbinding tutorial may be difficult to understand. Just start doing the steps and you will get it.

Things to keep before starting

<li />Big needle

<li />Carpet thread or strong nylon thread

<li />Paper clamp

<li />Ruler

The steps to make this binding are

1) Take the papers, arrange them properly and mark four points at equal distance with the ruler. Before doing that clamp near the spine so that the papers are held firmly. Keep the points at a small distance from the edges.

2) Make holes on the marked points with awl or any sharp object. Let us mark the holes with numbers. Starting from one edge mark 1,2,3 and 4 ( this is for making the instructions easier to understand.)

3) Now take the needle and thread. Run the needle through second point and make a knot. Take the needle through third point twice.

4) Pass the needle into the fourth point. Make two rounds through this point such that the thread winds the spine once and the other edge once.

5) Again take the needle through the third and second holes. Then take it to the first hole and just like the fourth hole pass needle two times. Once over the spine and once on the other edge.

6) Lastly, take the needle into the second hole and form a knot. Cut the remaining part of the thread.

After the above six steps you will have Yotsume Toji binding which is one of the simplest Japanese bookbinding methods. Don't worry if you get it wrong on the first attempt. Just try for sometime and you'll get it right.
