Caring for Roses

Posted: Aug 13, 2010 |

Roses are probably the most beautiful and most loved flower in gardens everywhere. But there is a misconception that caring for roses is a difficult activity. There are instances when this is true but it could be a lot easier for you if you know exactly what it is that your rose needs.

You do have to pay extra attention to these plants to help them maintain their beauty but once you are familiar with what they need, caring for roses should become naturally to you. When it comes to rose gardening, you would only have to consider the basic essentials such as sunlight, water and air. For roses, however, the primary thing really is making sure that they get enough water.

Your roses will look more beautiful and so healthier if you water the plant adequately. Rose plants need around an inch of water each week. Caring for your roses include checking the roots of your plants regularly. The roots should go really deep into the soil, so that your roses will receive water coming from the sub-soil even though sometimes the plant looks dry on the surface. This is helpful when rose plants go through dry spells. If you water the roots, the roses will grow deeper in the soil. If there is not enough water being given, the roots will grow really shallow.

Caring for your roses also requires fertilizing them. Most rose plants can go for years without being fed as long, as they are in good soil. The plant survives on nutrients that organisms in the soil produce. In fact, if you use too much man-made fertilizers, you might end up harming the beneficial organisms. Aside from this, the plant can be too dependent on the fertilizers.

When this happens, you will have to provide more than you initially needed to. What you can do is to place a slow-release fertilizer into the soil during the start of springtime. You can place a little fertilizer after the bloom season. But remember that midsummer is not the time to fertilize your roses. The best fertilizer to use is the organic kind but you can use inorganic ones as well. The best combination is either 4-8-4 or 5-10-5.

An essential part of rose gardening is pruning them regularly, in order to encourage proper circulation of nutrients to make your plants healthier. This is often done during spring time, after the plant gets out of its dormant stage. Pruning involves removing the broken, dead, and ailing parts of the plant. This gives the plant more breathing space, resulting in improved health. Pruning also improves the shape of the roses.

Caring for roses is a rewarding activity, although it does take a lot of patience. With proper rose gardening techniques, you will soon produce healthier, beautiful and fragrant roses.
