I am sure that many of you have never looked at a dime piece and thought about how this coin first became a part of our lives. The dime piece was introduced to the public in 1796. This coin has been so much part of our lives and history that you will find that there are certain adjustments that have been made to the dime piece so that it will be able to function in our busy lives.
When you look at the dime piece you will see on one side a portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The other side of the coin has a torch, and an oak branch and olive branch flanking the torch. The design for the dime piece was done by John R. Sinnock and the designs were placed on the dime piece in 1946. This smallest and thickest of the US coins was given the congressional stamp of approval in 1792.
Even though we know how the dime piece looks today there have been six major design changes to the dime piece. For each of these design changes the dime has been identified with another name. These different dime piece designs start with the Draped Bust which was used from 1796 to 1807.
The next one is the Capped Bust which was in the public usage during 1809 to 1837. You will find that the next change for the dime piece is the Seated Liberty for the length of time from 1837 to 1982. You then have the Barber dime piece design. This was seen by the public in 1892 until 1916. The next to last change was the Winged Liberty Head or as it was incorrectly called the Mercury in 1916 to 1945. We are now at the present day usage of the dime piece. From 1945 and up to the present the design on the dime piece is that of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
For the next change to occur it will be necessary for congress to pass approval. Until that time comes we can expect to see the dime piece in this condition. So the next time that you have a dime piece in your possession you may want to keep it until you can find the value. After all with so many dimes in circulation you may find a few that feature some of the earlier dime piece face designs.
While you may not consider the dime piece as a coin collectors item the fact that there have been major changes to the coin indicates that the dime was a part of our ever changing history and therefore valuable in that way.
