I love to burn candles, so I thought that learning how to make soy candles would be a fun hobby. The differences between soy candles and “regular” paraffin candles may make you want to throw out all your candles and replace them with soy candles.
Soy candles are made from hydrogenated soybean oil, which comes from soybeans. Paraffin, on the other hand, is a petroleum product made from crude oil waste. Since soy wax is a natural ingredient, it is completely biodegradable. If you learn how to make soy candles, they will burn cleaner, meaning less black soot on your walls or in your lungs. You will also find that soy wax is much easier to clean. Soap and water is all that is needed.
Soy wax has a low melting point, which means it doesn’t have to get very hot to melt. Since paraffin is a petroleum product, its melting point is hot enough to burn your skin. Pure soy wax, however, melts at such a low temperature that it won’t burn to the touch. This is an advantage when learning how to make soy candles, because they are safe to make and use around children and pets. The low melting point also means that soy candles will burn longer than paraffin candles. You may find that soy wax cost slightly more that paraffin wax, but soy candles will last longer than paraffin candles, so you won’t have to purchase supplies as often.
Learning how to make soy candles is not only an easy, fun activity, but it is also safer, more earth friendly and economical.
If you are now in the process of throwing out all your paraffin candles, and want to replace them with soy candles, visit How To Make Soy Candles for resources and supplies.
