You can find excellent boat plans suitable for beginners at the Wooden Boat Plans website, including easy to build plywood boat plans and small boat plans.
Building your own boat can be a wonderful experience, although if you are a beginner you may want to start using a method that is easy and manageable to make sure your project is a success. Boat building beginners generally have two options to choose between: either they can build their boat themselves using boat plans, or they can purchase a boat kit.
Each of these options has its advantages and disadvantages. Boat building kits are very easy for beginners. It is hard to go wrong with a kit, since everything you need to build your boat will be included, and often most of the labor is already done as well.
However, with a kit, you will be mainly assembling a boat instead of building a boat. If you are looking to truly build your own boat, you should probably use boat building plans instead. With the right boat plans, you can build a small boat almost as quickly and easily as with a kit.
Wooden boat kits are also fairly expensive when compared to building a boat from scratch using boat plans. Even for simple, plywood kits for a small boat such as a kayak, you can easily spend close to $1000. By choosing to build a boat yourself, you can save hundreds of dollars and have that special feeling of accomplishment you get from building a boat entirely on your own from scratch.
However, if you choose to build your boat yourself using boat plans, you need to make sure the plans you are using are suited for a beginning boat builder. Good plans will have step by step instructions of the entire boat building process, and include illustrations, detailed material lists and have helpful boat building tips and advice.
