Mixed Martial Arts Has Come Along Way

B.J. Penn. Chuck Liddell. Ken Shamrock. These men have done more for mixed martial arts than imaginable. 15 years ago Ultimate Fighting Championship was a little known sport. Joyce Gracey and his Brazillain Jiu Jitsu changed the meaning of what it meant to fight. In a no rules competition, he dominated and with that sent the UFC off the charts.

Now MMA has rules and weight classes. While you can no longer see a 175 pound guy fight against a 300 pound behemoth, you can still see a variety of fighting styles. Ground and pound is always a fan favorite as well as a stand up fight. But nothing amazes me more than the rear naked choke. The reason, size doesn't matter. No matter how big or strong you are, if you get caught in a rear naked choke, then you are tapping out or passing out. There are no other options. You have less than 10 seconds to tap out because no one can survive when the blood stops flowing to the brain. It is the most effective and always exciting to see.

Of course, MMA is more than pounding the daylights out of someone, and it is more than submissions. These are true athletes. You really never know who is going to win. When Matt Hughes and Matt Serra enter the octagon, it really could go either way. These guys are so well matched it comes down to a single solid blow.

Besides the sheer excitement of watching MMA, it has opened up the world of martial arts to the general public. People are beginning to realize that it's more than fancy moves. MMA follows more the Bruce Lee style, which worked in the streets. While I in no way support street fighting, I do support self defense, and MMA is the best self defense to date.
