Work is Worship

Work Is Worship!

Mahatma Gandhi mantra was ‘work is worship’ and throughout his life he faithfully followed the mantra. Post independence, this mantra lost its relevance and we Indians yet remember Mahatma Gandhi, popularly known as ‘Father of the Nation until today by observing Gandhi Jayanti on his birthday. We offer nation’s reverence and pay homage and floral tributes to him. However, what about his ‘mantra’? Have we inculcated this mantra in our living?

The answer seems to lie in the negative. On the contrary, the day, Gandhi Jayanti’, is observed by declaring it a national holiday. Holidays as usual are spent in gossips, shopping or other such activities. Recently India’s Minister of foreign affairs Shri Shashi Tharoor posed a question before the nation. The Question raised by Shashi Tharoor is whether we should holiday on Gandhi Jayanti or work on this day to uphold the mantra ‘work is worship’.

Tharoor suggested that ‘let’s find a better way to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation than taking the day off’. He suggested that even Gandhi would have approved wholeheartedly that his birthday should remain a tribute to his values and not degenerate into hollow symbolism’

People have commented differently on shashi’s sentiments and have suggested that the holiday on Gandhi Jayanti is a tribute to the Father of the Nation by rededicating to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.  Savita Singh Director Gandhi Darshan Samiti echoed’ Schools and Colleges should remain open so children can learn respecting Gandhi means working extra hard. They should try to adopt one of the 18 constructive principles of work he believed. Of course, we can have prayer meeting in the evenings’.

Savita’s comments seem more relevant. However, in my opinion this should work in all the spheres, offices, colleges, institutions, government, corporations et al. It is time that Gandhi ji’s Principles of work are included in the working principles of the country by us.  His work should be our guiding force. Gandhi led us to attain independence. This great sacrifice of Gandhi should not be history only, but a guiding force in all times to come.

The rules sought to be applied till now have been observed as "repealed" by the JSF, Chandigarh Administration, yet some of the junior level functionaries are passing on the matter to their seniors in a mechanical manner and hence the woes of the hapless GPAs have yet to be redressed by the Administration. I shall continue writing on the subject and every subsequent article shall endeavor to bring out the anamolied
