The arrival of a baby is unquestionably an exciting time and a time to celebrate but it is also often a nervous time spent running around making sure that you have everything you need and stressing about whether or not you are going to be able to cope. This of course is especially true if you are first-time parents.
The idea of the baby shower came about as both a time for family and friends to get together prior to the baby's arrival and to help relieve the financial burden on parents-to-be by giving them a lot of the furnishings and accessories that they are going to need as soon as their baby arrives.
Despite the fact that nowadays most people like to break away from tradition when it comes to a baby shower, for the most part these events still stick largely to traditional guidelines. Possibly one of the most significant changes to the baby shower format is the fact that they are no longer exclusively for women and plenty of men make it onto today's baby shower guest list and are happy to join in. Although they may not play all of the shower games, men do get pleasure from the chance to give their regards to the expectant mother and father-to-be.
You must bear in mind though that in some cultures a baby shower is thought to be a sign of bad luck and so, if it is possible that the expectant mother might believe that it is unlucky, you ought to check before holding a shower.
In some parts of the world the baby shower is in fact held after the baby is born while it others it takes place prior to the birth. In a lot of ways it is sensible to hold the shower after the birth as a baby shower is a celebration of the baby and guests obviously like to see the focal figure of the celebration. It also makes it much easier to pick gender-appropriate colors and gifts and, if your gift needs engraving, guests have all of the details they need.
Even though holding the shower after the baby's birth does make sense it is an extremely hectic time for parents and a lot of the items that the need are needed the moment the baby arrives home. That is why having the baby shower before the baby's birth is becoming a more common option these days.
The baby shower itself is traditional and in most cases showers involve the same basic planning and activities. Guest lists will have to be drawn up, a location chosen and invitations delivered out. The shower location then has to be decorated and food, drink and games organized. And, as it is a very special occasion, you may also want to consider having a musician or other performer taking part in the festivities and also a photographer to record the day.
A baby shower can become a big event with a lot of things to arrange that are going to cost a lot of money. As a result it is sensible to draw up a budget for your shower before you start and then ensure that you keep to it.
Having a successful baby shower does not require any special talent but it does require a carefully thought out plan that includes both a timeline and a budget.
