It is not uncommon to hear of someone shipping a vehicle anymore. What used to be a corporate only thing has come to the public sector. There are a variety of reasons for shipping a vehicle, but preparing a car for a vehicle hauling company always remains the same. Consider this preparation before you decide to ship a car, and take the steps you need to in order to make sure that your vehicle is being prepared on your behalf.
Weight Considerations
Most car shipping companies charge for a shipment based on its weight. This means that larger vehicles will always cost more than smaller vehicles. While you cannot help the weight of the vehicle itself, there are some things that you can do to cut down the overall weight you are charged for.
- Gasoline - Fuel can weight quite a bit if you consider a gas tank. Most tanks can carry anywhere from eleven to thirty gallons of gas. In order to cut the most weight from your shipment, make sure that the fuel tank is as close to empty as you can get it.
- Extra Seats - Many vans and some cars have extra seats that can be removed. If you can, remove these seats and ship them with the rest of your things or leave them at home.
- Other Items - Toolboxes, add-ons, and other extras all add weight. Removing these things before the vehicle is shipped will cut the weight of the vehicle and thus the cost of shipping it.
Preparations
No matter what company you choose to ship your vehicle, you need to make a few preparations before you release it to the carrier. Preparing the car will ensure the safety of the car as well as the driver of the hauling truck.
- Get an Inspection - There are mechanics and other companies that provide inspections for vehicles that will be shipped. The inspection will let the vehicle hauler know of any problems, such as leaks.
- Take pictures - If there are any dents, scratches, or other damage that is already on the car, it is vital to document it with pictures. Pictures will provide proof of the vehicle when it was loaded if any disputes come up later.
- Secure Everything - If anything is loose, such as hood ornaments, decals, hubcaps, or anything inside the car, it is best to either remove it or secure it. This will prevent the items from being lost or causing damage to the vehicle.
Insurance
While it is not hard to get a vehicle ready for shipment, you should always be prepared for problems that might occur in transit. These problems can manifest themselves as damage or loss. Make sure to verify all coverage with your insurance company. In some cases you may have to pay an extra fee to cover the vehicle in transit, but you will find that it is always better to be covered than to deal with the cost of damages at a later date.
