Comfort Sleeper Technology – Better Sitting & Sleeping

We all remember back twenty, thirty years ago of having to spend a night somewhere on a pull out sofa bed, sofa sleeper or davenport sofa bed. Thin innerspring mattress, hard metal bars in your back and generally not a very good night’s sleep. You’d be surprised by how many of these sofa sleepers still exist today and see daily use. There are better sleepers out there however if you know where to look. In this article we’ll talk about many of the new innovations in comfort sleeper technology and how these translate into a better night’s sleep for you and those you know.

The idea behind a sofa sleeper is quite simple. Allow a piece of furniture to exist as both a sitting piece and something that can fold out into a bed. Simple right? Sure, but just like anything there comes the good with the bad and this is something that has been an issue for sofa beds for some time that needed someone to step up and find a solution.

The Good:
Sofa sleepers as a whole are a great idea. You are able to use space more efficiently by having a smaller room accommodate one piece of furniture that can seat you and your guests and doubles as a bed. From a space saving standpoint this is an important feature especially in apartments, lofts and smaller rooms. Definitely a well thought out concept.

The Bad:
Sofa beds have received a bad rap over the years due in part to the poor design many manufacturers had incorporated into the frame of the conversion mechanism. Many would waste space by leaving large gaps from the sofa to the beginning of the mattress support system not only at the head of the sleep surface but on the sides as well. This wasted space translated into having to build larger frames around the mechanism making the sofa sleepers quite wide and cumbersome.

The Solution:
Robert & Barbara Tiffany, furniture engineer and designer came up with an innovative mechanism for a new generation of sofa sleepers that they would come to call the Tiffany 24/7™ mechanism. They would incorporate this mechanism into the patented Comfort Sleeper™ which would solve many of the issues that had plagued conventional sofa sleepers. The mechanism allows for easy operation from sofa to bed and is so self contained that it eliminates the gap that normally exists on pull out models between the sleep surface and the sofa. The mechanism also eliminates the “bar in the back” that so many people have taken issue with over the years by creating a more streamlined platform for the mattress. Speaking of mattresses, this new design also can be used with modern high density foam mattresses and memory foam mattresses. These mattresses promote a more comfortable sleep without the use of older steel coil sleeper systems.

The Sizes:
Sofa sleepers have always been traditionally offered in full and queen sizes which provide adequate sleep space. However in the last 10 years many additional sizes are becoming more available to meet your specific sleep requirements no matter what room you’re placing your sleeper. King size sleepers offer the greatest sleep area as well as super queen size sleepers. If you’re looking for something for individual sleeping you can get twin and cot size sleepers as well. One manufacturer, American Leather® even offers their sleepers in real length 80” long sleepers. Not like many other brands which are at the best 75” long. If you have tall guests using your sleeper or if you are tall that added 5” can be the difference between a comfort sleeper or a short sleeper.

Living with a sofa sleeper with an uncomfortable mattress, several bars in your back and being too short doesn’t have to be the norm. Your sofa sleeper also doesn’t have to use up all of your wall space. You’ll find that today’s sleepers make better use of innovative designs such as the Tiffany 24/7™ mechanism which provides easy operation and is more contained and streamlined to hug the inside of the sofa better when folded out. It’s design also eliminates the bar in your back and provides an innovative support system for the mattress. With the available upgrades in foam and memory foam mattress options modern sleepers can provide more in the way of comfort that older smaller spring mattresses can’t. Real bed sizes are also now available which can be a huge plus for taller individuals using the sleeper for a couple of nights or someone using their sleeper as a bed every night.

If you’re searching for a piece of furniture with a dual function as both a place to sit and a place to sleep the comfort sleeper is your best option. Modern styling, design innovations and current mattress technology will provide you with the comfort and relaxation that both you and your guests need and want.
