Tracing ancestral information can be one of the many exciting projects one can undertake as she is living. It may not be an easy task but the rewards are immense and the joy of discovering family history is just immeasurable. In fact, the product of the entire search is an output one would not keep to himself, but something he can share to other people, most especially family.
A genealogical data or ancestral information may be represented or displayed in many ways or formats. One of the most common and preferred means, is through the fabrication of family trees. There are many designs, shapes and types of such – there are just so many examples of family trees! These are either available in the generation-kept scrapbooks or through online-maintained databases. One thing is usually consistent though, family trees usually feature the oldest generations at the topmost part of the tree, newer and newest generations occupy the lower portions respectively. More often than not, this example of ancestry chart or record, resembles a tree in shape – it being wider at the top area, than the bottom. One of the most famous examples available on the internet is that one tagged as “The Family Tree of Sigmund.” In some cases though, it is made that the younger generations are positioned on the left side of the “tree” while the older generations or ancestors are placed on the right side of the diagram. One of the best examples of family trees of this kind is that dubbed as “Lucas Grey Tree.” There are many formations and choices in positioning one’s ancestral data. One thing must be consistent though, there should be understandable and easily identifiable order; otherwise, it defeats the purpose of having made available such family linage data.
There is more flexibility however on the “family tree maker” in terms of what theme to use. A researcher can opt to trace and form a tree based on all the descendants or ancestors of a single figure (singular ancestral- or descendant-based). Otherwise, he may opt to go by surname. As it is in one family, mix of surnames is inevitable. Hence for better classification and more ordered tracing, one surname for one tree, becomes a viable option. Another theme could be a “tree” based on office or title holders. For example, Kings of London or Sultans of Brunei. Or, Army Sergeants from Iowa. Or, Tenors and Sopranos from Dallas. There is room for creativity, while maintaining ordered classification in this example of family tree. In fact, this type entertains more fun and additional information as it does not just aim tracing of whose father is who or whose grandchild is such. It allows the distinct family tradition or heritage to be identified and remembered from generations to generations.
There are many types and choices to choose from in assembling once family tree. However, it must be remembered that apart from the physical or visual representation of a “family tree” what remains more important is the accuracy and the extensiveness of information gathered during the ancestry search.
