Bedwetting has most people believing it is hereditary. Doctor’s believed that if a family member wet the bed, then it could pass down to the next generation. Although no one can say for sure, there are health problems that can cause bedwetting and you need to address this problem right away. If your child never wet the bed before and suddenly starts, there has to be an underlying problem.

Hereditary bedwetting is different from sudden bedwetting. If you never had a problem with bedwetting before and your child has suddenly started having accidents, you might need to consult a medical professional. Many health related problems could cause sudden bedwetting such as stress, bladder problems, UTI (urinary tract infection), diabetes and constipation. You also need to be aware there are psychological issues that may cause sudden bedwetting such as trauma, abuse and peer pressure.

If the problem is from a health problem, a doctor will run blood tests to check for UTI, diabetes and ask questions regarding bathroom habits as well as checking for bladder problems. In some cases, more tests may be warranted if the blood work shows signs of problems. All children are different and sometimes stress will cause bedwetting. If your child is starting a new school, afraid of failing a test or has to stand in front of the class and read a story, they may have sudden bedwetting. This is more of an embarrassment than a health problem.

Children who experience psychological issues may start bedwetting. The body’s way of warding off fear is a release of control and many children of physical and mental abuse develop problems with bedwetting. This problem along with the causes needs immediate medical attention. You need to find out the underlying problem that is causing the bedwetting. A consoler or a child psychologist will be able to help with finding out the problem. It is always better to find out the problem early rather than waiting to see if it goes away. It may stop as suddenly as it started, but if it lasts longer than two weeks, you need professional advice.
