It’s that time of year again when the nights are starting to draw in and heating is being turned up. It’s nearly Christmas and while that brings a lot of things to look forward to, it also brings with it large bills, and your winter electricity bill can be one of the biggest.
But cutting down on your electricity bill doesn’t mean you have to have a ‘bah humbug’ Christmas. There are plenty of ways to help save money and help protect the environment without forcing you to make too many sacrifices.
Reducing consumption and cutting down on waste is key to reducing bills and green living and it doesn’t have to cost too mush either. Here are five ways of cutting down on your bills this winter:
1. Use energy saving bulbs – Green lightbulbs provide just as much lighting as conventional bulbs but consume far less power. This will make great savings in both your bills and the amount of carbon you produce.
2. Identify areas of waste – A large portion of our quarterly bill is down too wastage; lights left on and devices left on standby are the main culprits. Think about buy an energy monitor or a stand-by saver.
3. Ensure your heating system is functioning properly – A faulty boiler can use far more power than is necessary and ensure you have adequate insulation in your loft, bad insulation can cost a fortune in lost heat.
4. Think about alternative methods of power – If you have an open fireplace, why not burn recycled paper. Log makers help you to do this efficiently and it can help reduce your heating costs.
5. Think green at Christmas – While it is a time of extravagance there is no need to have the Christmas tree lights on when there is nobody home. And if you are buying gifts that require batteries consider a solar charger, which will benefit both your bills and the environment in the long run.
