December doesn’t have to be just for the holidays. Sure, the holidays can be a big part of the end of the year, but that is no reason to skip your birthday celebration. Make your December birthday stand out with fun, seasonal party accents and ideas. The weather may be ‘frightful’ but you can make your party ‘delightful.’
Invitations
Seasonal colors – from reds and greens to winter white and rich jewel tones - can make your birthday invitations shine. Draw your inspiration from the Christmas symbols of the season – Santa, Christmas trees – or the winter wonderland all around you. Make your invitations stand out with snowflake and icicle designs.
If you are planning your birthday as a totally separate occasion from the holidays, you might consider choosing another color scheme for your invitations. Steer clear of any reds and greens if you’re hoping to differentiate the two parties.
If your plan is to combine your birthday celebration with the holidays, make sure you give ample notice with your party invitations. While your family is gathering for the holidays, this can be a great chance to celebrate your birthday also.
Party ideas
December is likely to be snowy so plan on keeping your activities inside. If you don’t have a pool table, break out the board games, video games or even a great movie to watch while you eat your birthday cake and ice cream.
You do have a few outdoor options. Send your birthday party invitations and ask guests to bundle up and host an outdoor bonfire, ice skating, sleigh ride or snowman building contest. Have some marshmallows for toasting or a thermos of hot chocolate on hand to add to the festive night.
Other fun ideas can include themes that don’t have anything at all to do with the time of year. You’ve heard of ‘Christmas in July’ why not have a 4th of July in December. Or create an indoor luau to beat the winter blues. Just because it’s December doesn’t mean you have to have a Christmas or Hanukah theme. Make your party stand out with a unique theme no matter what time of year it is.
Menu
You should steer clear of traditional seasonal foods as many of your guests will be getting their fill during the holiday season. Instead opt for some more casual favorites – chili can be hearty and warm for a chilly season. Or a rich beef stew can add lots of cozy to your party. Pastas can also be a great and unique choice.
Holiday beverages can be varied and fun. Hot apple cider and cranberry juice cocktails are always great choices. Peppermint hot chocolate and flavored coffees can be a rich and warm treat, too.
Don’t skimp on your December birthday just because it’s the holidays. You deserve a great birthday, no matter what time of year it is. Whether you choose to stand apart from the holidays with your own clever and unique theme or join the celebrations, make your December birthday a celebration to remember.
