How to Break the "Evil Stepmother Syndrome"

Do you remember all those fairy tales that you heard when you were younger that that dealt with a wicked stepmother? Stepmothers have always gotten a bad review from storytellers and history alike.

In the fairy tales, Cinderella's stepmother made her clean the house and act like a servant. Snow White's stepmother literally tried to kill her. Unfortunately, these stories were a reflection of the times long ago when they were first told. In the past, many women died in childbirth and most children were raised by their father's second or even third wife. In the world of the powerful and wealthy, this second wife looked after the interests of her own children and was much less concerned about her stepchildren.

This was especially true when large inheritances were involved. A man's eldest son usually inherited the father's possessions. While this son may have felt obliged to take care of his full-blooded brothers and sisters, this loyalty did not always extend to the children of his father's second marriage. Oftentimes, these youngsters received little or nothing at all.

Thus, many second wives exerted as much authority as they could to ensure that their husbands provided monetary allowances to their children as well. Other women went as far as to persuade their husbands to eliminate the children of the first marriage from their will, ensuring that their children inherited everything.

When thrones were at stake, women of second marriages could be ruthless. In ancient times, it was not unusual for a second wife to kill the children of her predecessor to gain the throne for her own offspring. Others imprisoned or exiled these rightful heirs to remove them from the scene.

In today's society, the picture of the evil stepmother still exists. Many children resent the presence of a new woman in their father's life. Others display the hostility that is felt by their own mother towards this intruder. In many cases, a new stepmother is seen as an obstacle towards the reconciliation of the children's mother and father, although this reunion is often based on unrealistic dreams.

If you are a new stepmother, you should expect not to be particularly popular with your stepchildren. You will need to understand the children's feelings and allow them to adjust to you at their own pace instead o pushing the issue.
If the children's resentment is based on hostility from your husband's first spouse, he should discuss it with her so that they can reach some kind of agreement that will be beneficial for everyone concerned. It is probably not a good idea for you to speak to her, as you are not her favorite person, either.

If the hostility is a result of the children's dreams of a parental reconciliation, your husband and his first spouse should talk to them and explain the impossibility of this scenario. It is more effective if the children hear this naked truth from both parents which will make them more likely to believe it.

Stepchildren can be difficult to deal with at first. By exerting a little effort and a lot of patience you may find that you can develop a close and loving relationship with these youngsters.

Im actually glad to see Im not the only one in this situation. From reading the information available on the web I was beginning to believe that everyone thought that kids just didnt like stepmothers. In My case I was very excepting of my dads new wife because I believed he would be more happy with her. I have done everything within my power to make her feel comfortable. The first thing she did was demanded that dad get my transcripts because she dosent believe that I was actually enrolled in school even though they were getting the bill. I should also add that My father is a physician that married our housekeeper. I did not judge and tried to convince myself that love comes in mysterious ways even though My common sense was thinking shes out to get him this is her 4th marriage. let me see if I can name some of the things shes done. My sister came in town to see my dad. She hadnt seen him in 3 years she wanted to go out to eat with just him. The "housekeeper" as i like to call her pitched a fit like a 15 year old and threatened to kill herself and make it look like he did it etc...

I decided at one point to take out student loans to pay for my college so she couldnt bitch about that. Dad payed my cell phone bill and car insurance which was not much. When i finished school I got several job interviews lined up in my home town and state. The cleaning lady had my phone disconnected (without warning) right before the interviews so they could not contact me and I could not contact them. They did not inform me they were not going to pay my insurance anymore and had the company foward a bill to me in my name for 6 months of overdue payments totalling over $600.00

I was staying with them for a few days after i finished college until i could get my own place and find a job. One day I went to visit my grandparents and while I was gone she called movers and had everything I owned moved into storage. that was two years ago and I have not been able to get any of it back. This is just a few of the incidences that have been plagueing my life because of this woman. I still to this day dont have a clue why she hates me so much and wants to see me fail.

Dear Readers:
Enough about the evil stepmoms. We all need to hear about how evil stepsisters are. My horrid disturbing stepsister is literally the spawn of satan. I mean, sure, we always hear about the evil stepmothers, which i totally agree with, but come on! What about those of us who suffer under the wrath of the stepsister? My stepsister is the most disgusting creature you will ever set your eyes on. And believe me, no one looks at her on purpose. She never cleans her diseased skin or flea infested hair. You can smell her from down the hallway at school. People call her a Troll, which is exactly what she looks like. I am so thankful that we don't have the same last name, or I would be ruined. For those of you who know what I am talking about, if you survive, you are a hero! Plus, she is full of excrescence, look it up if you don't know what it means.
Sincerely,
Chica Bonita

I hate how it all goes back to kids. Step mothers are not always mean or evil but mine certaintly is and my friends who have step mothers are in the same situation. My step mom loves to lie about me to her family and friends to make me look like abad role model for my step cousin. Now she only does that because she's jealous that my step cousin loves me and when she's over on the weekends she hangs out with me and not my 5 year old half brother. She will yell at my 11 year old cousin to yell at me when we both have done nothing wrong and just woke up from bed. Now I am 18 and I work so my step mother will plan things to do with the whole family while I am working. She also complains when my dad gives me money for school. Last year my dad gave me money for an AP English test and says don't forget about me and my son, when the just came back from Dutch Wonderland that day, yet again, without me. My dads house is a shrine to my brother and the one picture of me is hidden behind pictures of my brother. She lies to my dad saying I never help her around the house. She tried to get me in trouble when I left for a chur h function and she was sleeping so I just left and didn't say goodbye because she just had a surgery and I didn't want to disturb her. She puts my brother up to things to try to get me in trouble and spoon feeds him crap that isn't true. Now I believe she tries to get me in trouble because I never get in trouble because I never do anything bad. I'm a good student, I don't curse, I don't do anything bad and I believe that bothers her that I'm such a good child. Now the evil stepmother theory applies probably 70% of the time. Stepmothers are evil, jealous, conceited, gold digging people.

Dear Readers:
I am utterly shocked. I started reading this article, hoping to find some reassurance in my theory that stepmoms are indeed incredibly evil. My horrid, disgusting, reeking, evilistic step is the most horrible thing in my life. I regret even walking in the door when I come home, because I know that I will be fighting all night long, and then given some disgusting, absurd chore to do because I stood up for myself while I was being verbally battered. In my mind, I have contemplated many diverse ways to painfully inflict death upon my stepmother. I hate even including the word "mother" because she has never been one to me. I hate her more than anything. I hate her more than Hitler hated the Jews....which is obviously a lot. If there was a whole race of Chris, my step-can't say the other word, I would exterminate them all. Thank you for reading this. Oh, don't call the cops or anything...I'm not going to actually kill her, no matter how much I would enjoy it. I refuse to stoop to that level.

Sincerely,
Chica Bonita

We are not alone when it comes to having evil stepmothers and/or stepfathers. When my parents divorced they each remarried. My mother was remarried first, to a seemingly nice guy, but two days before she died of cancer, he withdrew all the money from one of the accounts they shared and closed the account. A couple weeks later, after the will was read, it was in there that myself and my two brothers were to receive the money in that one bank account. We were under the impression he had his name on it, just in case. But since my stepfathers name was on it - he was able to take everything just before she died. My family has not spoken to him since he did this. My father is going down the same path. A younger wife who had no money. My dad is well off but I never see a penny of it because she controls everything. She has her name on everything. Any time her kids need money they get it. I work hard for a living while her kids are in and out of jail. I know that when my dad passes, she and her jerk sons will inherit everything and my brothers and I will get nothing. Sad but true - stepmothers are evil. My dad doesn't believe that she would disinherit us, but my mother didn't think it would happen either. I don't know what it is - but when money is involved, the good always loose because they are outsmarted by the evil.
