How to Face an Intruder in your Home?

You are sleeping peacefully when a slight noise disturbs around 2.00 a.m. You think it is probably cat or something. Yet, when it happens again, you become apprehensive. What if there is an intruder with a knife standing close to your bed! Here is how you should deal with such situations:

• If the burglar has already made his way into your bed room and taken you unawares you should pretend to be sleeping. Do not risk any confrontation with him because you are unarmed. Most burglars are interested only in stealing your goods and getting out. They attack you only when they have to protect themselves.

• Do not underestimate the situation in case the burglar is in some other part of your house. Be proactive. Take instant action if you hear burglar alarm.

• Shut the door of your bed room immediately, lock it and place something heavy such as a chair, a table or a dresser under the door handle to prevent the intruder from forcing his entry into your room.

• Switch on the lights and inform the police at once from your cell phone if you think the landline has been cut. Talk in low tones so that the burglar does not hear your call.

• Arm yourself with something heavy and effective to protect yourself in case you have to face him head on. You may take up a baseball bat, an iron rod, a golf club, a cricket bat and more preferably a firearm such as a revolver or a gun. Be prepared to use it in case he forces his way into your room.

• Raise noise in your room. Beat the doors with something that creates noise and shout out for the police. The noise may scare away the intruder.

• Open your window to create an escape route in case the burglar makes his way into your room even through the barricade.

• Stay put inside your room till the police arrives and knocks at your door.

• Ask the police to thoroughly check all the possible hiding places in your house such as the attic/loft and the basement. Quite possibly the intruder may still be hiding there till he is found by one of the policemen.
