It is commonly said that moving home is one of the most stressful things we put ourselves through. From personal experience I can say that's probably true. But whether you are moving a few streets way, to another city or town, or to another continent, having the right removal company can relieve you of a lot of that stress.
You need an efficient, honest and reliable mover. They should have built up a good reputation, they should be insured, licensed, and professional. Also they should be aware of, and understand your needs, and be willing to offer good advice based upon their experience.
Here are a few pointers to finding the right removals company for you:
1: Meet up with your proposed mover, preferably at their premises initially. Try to get a feel for the company and how they operate. Check how long they have been in the business and ask for a few references. A reputable mover will have no problem with this.
2: Having obtained the references do check them. Contact them and ask how their move went. If the company were efficient and reliable etc. Don't forget to ask if there were any problems, and if so how did the mover resolve them.
3: It's always a good idea these days (and really no excuse not to with ease of access anywhere) to do an online check. Just key in the name of the mover you are checking, and add the word "forums". This will quite likely bring up any problems others have had with that mover, complaints, warnings etc.
4: Check with the local chamber of commerce or bank to get an idea of the mover's business standing. Again, a reputable mover will have no problem with a prospective client doing their homework.
5: Make sure that the mover's insurance is up to date and adequate. Make sure they are properly licensed. Also a good idea to check if they provide employees with a compensation package and benefits. A company that looks after it's workers will look after you.
6: You should also find out if the removal company will handle the work themselves or farm it out to another company. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Many removals companies have reciprocal arrangements with other movers, especially when they are moving someone well out of their area. Just remember that you will have to apply all the checks to the mover who will actually be doing the move.
7: This follows on from point 6, in that you should make sure that if you are moving some distance, that your mover has good connections/contacts in the area you are moving to if they don't have their own offices there.
8: Make sure your mover is a member of The American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA), or similar trade organisation if you are outside the states. Members of professional associations will have to be of a certain standard, and will be following an industry approved code of standards.
9: Don't ask a removals company to give you an instant price. A professional company will never do this anyway. Every move is different, and they should want to inspect your home/premises, check exactly what is to be moved. Any items requiring special care/handling. They will then prepare and send you a detailed estimate.
Some movers will offer an all-in service. That is they will come and pack for you, to your instructions, and unpack at the other end, placing everything where you want it. Even to the point of providing collapsible wardrobes for clothing so it doesn't need to be folded. Although more expensive, you may well feel that this is worth it for a hassle free move.
10: Ask your mover exactly what services they can provide, and what you can expect. Do they offer storage, guaranteed times etc. Don't be afraid to ask, it's your stuff, your money, and a reputable mover will be more than happy to explain anything you are not sure of
It really is well worth the time spent to find the right moving company for your situation, ask the questions and get the answers. don't forget that in everything you tend to get what you pay for. Don't make the mistake of trying to save a few dollars when it could end up costing you hundreds or thousands when it goes wrong.
Follow these few basic tips, get the right mover and enjoy your move!
