How to Get Your Kids Involved in School Fundraising

There are many ways families can work together to raise funds for their school. The good news is, school fundraising can be great fun for children, who learn valuable skills in the process.

School fundraising can help raise cash to invest in improved facilities, or extra activities for the children, all of which can enhance their educational experience further.

Also, involving the kids in school fundraising helps children develop a sense of community, teamwork and achievement.

One of the first steps is to invite children to come up with school fundraising ideas. Their imaginations are boundless, and a really original, quirky idea can sometimes prove the most successful.

Schools or PTA groups could hold a ‘brainstorming session’ inviting children to attend and contribute ideas. Teachers can also ask their classes to contribute to the fundraising ideas pot. This allows all the kids to feel involved, and experience working together on an important project.

It can help for adults to have a few initial ideas up their sleeves to get the discussion started – it won’t be long before the kids take over!

Competitions and raffles are always popular, and local businesses are often happy to donate a prize or two.

Social events ranging from a disco to a quiz night or even salsa dancing can prove popular.

Kids love dressing up, so ask them to come up with themes for a fancy dress day to raise money. Challenge the children to think of a theme that is topical, seasonal or has local relevance.

The festive season is the ideal time to tap into the generosity of the community, and events such as a Christmas bazaar can be school fundraising winners.

Another idea which is always a success is school Christmas cards. Most families will buy cards to send loves ones, and buying something which has been produced by the school feels more meaningful than a mass produced pack from the supermarket.

Families will also be happy to buy cards knowing the proceeds are going to straight to helping their child’s school.

Producing your own schools Christmas cards is also an exciting way to let children explore their creative sides while getting into the yuletide spirit. Children can be asked to design the card, or write a little poem for the card’s message.

Children love to feel involved in school fundraising and their entrepreneurial instincts will come to the fore as they ensure they sell cards to grandparents, neighbours, friends and anyone who they meet!
