Is Your Family Prepared for an Emergency? Part 3

Be Informed: The next step www.ready.gov recommends is to be informed. Reading through some of the sites that I recommended in the first part of this series will inform you generally, but you should also peruse local government sites to learn about natural disasters that your area deals with. Some sites that might be of help for that are www.protectingamerica.org and www.72hours.org .

Get Involved: There are two wonderful ways to get involved in your community that will also help you and your family. The first way to get involved is to get certified in CPR and Basic First Aid. The American Red Cross offers reasonably priced classes all over the country (as well as classes in disaster preparedness, life guard training, and more). www.redcross.org

Another excellent way to be involved that many people have not heard of is to get CERT certified. CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team. Here is a description from their website:

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.” (www.citizencorps.gov/cert/)

The training program in my area runs for 2 ½ hours per class, once a week for eight weeks.
