To ensure that your air conditioner is efficient in what it does and also has a long life, you must take proper care of the unit. And taking proper care of your filters in the air conditioner is one of the most fundamental aspects of maintaining an air conditioner.
The fact is one needs only to clean the filters regularly along with some general cleaning and this would keep your air conditioner in its best condition. There isn't much hassle with that. Cleaning the filter of an air conditioner is one of the easiest things you can do. You wouldn't need any professional help and you can do it all by yourself.
We must first understand why we need to keep the air filters free of any dirt or dust. This is because only if the filter is clean the air conditioner will be working in its most efficient condition. If dust and dirt begin to accumulate in the filter then the air handler starts pulling this pollutants inside through the evaporator coil. Now the evaporator coil would be wet because of the condensation it is used for, and now the dirt coming in contact with the coil turns into mud cakes. This has a two-fold effect. First of all, it would significantly reduce the transfer of the heat between the coil and the adjacent air. Secondly, it would also hamper the air flow in the unit. There is a third effect too slightly less serious. The moisture that used to get condensed on the surface of the coil will also stop settling. In fact in the worst case scenario, this efficiency level would drop by 20%. Now that is a lot, especially in one of those hot, scorching days. It would also mean that your electric bills would be soaring by the day.
To get the problem of your air conditioner filter fixed, you first have to switch off the unit and then remove the filter as described in the instruction manual. Now depending upon the state you find the filter in, you can either replace it, or you can just clean it and put it back in. if you intend to clean, then use a damp cloth and little bit of detergent. This should do. Of course don't put the filter back on again until it is dry.
If however, you find the condition of the filter demanding it to be replaced, then you should go to your local hardware store and get yourself a replacement filter. However, be careful that you get the proper one or it will damage your unit.
