Measure Your Energy Efficiency with Smart Meters

Everyone is trying to improve their energy efficiency. Consuming too much energy is not only increasingly expensive, it’s also ecologically bad for the planet.

Whilst a few years ago, a lot of people were quite indifferent to their energy consumption, now most people are genuinely concerned about their carbon footprint and how much of the Earth’s natural resources are being exhausted. The problem now is that people are concerned but don’t necessarily know the most effective methods in order to reduce their energy consumption.

If you currently aren’t doing anything about the amount of energy you use, then you should consider taking an energy health check. That’s where smart meters come in. Smart meters are a new initiative which allows users to get up-to-the-minute information on exactly how much energy they are using at any given time.

Smart meters replace your old analogue meter which is monitored periodically by the gas and electricity board to register how much energy you are consuming. Smart meters take all of the hassle and inaccuracies out of the process, with a small digital meter which transfers data directly to the utility company without having to be in the house to monitor your energy consumption.

What’s particularly good about smart meters is that it puts the power in the hands of the consumer. You can check your smart meter at any time of the day to get a progress report on how much energy you are using and how much it is costing you to sustain that use. As part of your energy health check, you can try switching off a few electrical appliances, like turning your TV completely off (not standby) and seeing what a difference it makes to the results on your smart meter in real time.

Smart meters give you all the metrics and information you need in order to monitor your energy use effectively, and then armed with that knowledge you can find the best solutions for you in order to curb your gas and electricity expenditure.
