Moving house and recycling

When moving house, it is very easy to find that after packing the most important and essential items, many of us are left with useless insignificant “junk items”.

These could be things from a childhood; items given to you that were bought and put away “in case” they were needed in the future, unwanted gifts, things that you cannot even remember owning in the first place and of course meaningless rubbish.

However in every case you should find a means of recycling your items. You never know, the rummaging after a clearout may even reveal things such as bubble wrap, moving boxes or any other useful home moving equipment that was not needed until now.

When you have decided on the items that can definitely be used for recycling, you will be pleased to hear that there are also many ways to do this and lots of places that are happy to help with the process.

Donating your items is one of the most selfless deeds you can do with them and will of course make the charities or people in need who take them extremely grateful for your kindness. Items such as clothing and blankets that a lot of people have lying around will also be of great use to these types of organisations.

Another option is to use free cycle type of services in which people can swap items, give them away and pick up things that they are in need for free.  One persons junk is another persons treasure and you will be surprised at the amount of responses you will have for items that you did not even consider useful.

On the other hand if it is other people junk that you may need for your own move such as boxes, wrapping paper, polystyrene, labels, tags, sticky tape etc then these places are also good to look for things yourselves.

Of course, although appreciated, not everybody has the time and patience to sort through items for charitable gifts and then find an organisation or charity to give them to. The next step is therefore to find a responsible removal rubbish service that will filter through the junk that you hand over and remove any recyclable or reusable items for you.

Things such as metal from cans, paint, and other sources of chemicals will best be rid of at a hazardous waste depot or somewhere who will rid of them safely and responsibly. Do not put these items at a landfill or pass them on to some who is not responsible enough to use the item.
