While you are in the research phase, jot down ideas you have for the layout or overall plan of the rooms in your home that are most in need of remodel and repair. For many of us, the high traffic kitchen and bathroom(s) are the rooms where we will begin.
Ultimately, you will need to form an image of how you want your home to look both in your mind and on paper. You can utilize special software designed to help layout remodels, or even start drawing a sketch. Before you start calling contractors or making any remodel supply purchases, you need to have a precise idea of what you want and how it will fit into your room.
If you've never undertaken a remodeling plan yourself before, consider consulting a designer or professional for assistance, at least for your first room. A designer is an expert at helping you make the most of a given space while meeting your needs and your budget. If a professional designer seems too expensive, consider the added cost mistakes and mishaps can cause during a remodel. Wasted materials and man hours add up quick.
To help defray the cost, consider consulting with an expert at a home improvement store or shop. They will often assist you with designing kitchens or baths free of charge. An added benefit is, you can see and pick out the exact items you will need for the remodel on location.
An expert will also help guide you in selecting additional accessories you will need to make truly complete a remodel. Lighting fixtures, doorknobs, switch plates and even towel racks can easily be coordinated for style and function. Having all of the necessary items on hand for your remodel is essential if your contractor is going to complete the job quickly and professionally.
Completing your remodel plans is the first step in creating a gorgeous, modernized home. Working with a trusted contractor and purchasing the materials you will need is second.
Third, you will want to stay involved in the remodel process by making yourself available to the contractor for open communication. Check the progress of each day's work upon completion, ask questions and provide feedback when requested. Although you may not perform the work yourself, you are responsible for ensuring all of your planning pays off in a beautifully remodeled room.
