Able Skills provide a wide range of plastering courses
Copyright (c) 2008 Able Skills
There are many plastering jobs that can be completed by amateurs but plastering a ceiling is not one of them. Although filling cracks, plastering walls and other surfaces can be done relatively easily, plastering a ceiling correctly takes skill and knowledge.
This is not to say that plastering a ceiling cannot be done by a do-it-yourselfer, nor is it to say that a do-it-yourselfer should not plaster a ceiling. What it does mean, however, is that before you plaster a ceiling, make sure you know exactly what you need to do so you get it right the first time because a major problem can occur if it is not done right the first time. A plastering course will provide you with the knowledge, practice and information about the plastering trade and is advisable before you get started.
Learning How to Do the Job
Before you invest in scaffolding, ladders or even plain step stools to reach the ceiling and before you go out and spend a great deal of money on plaster, make certain you are comfortable with what you are doing. It is important to understand the correct way to plaster a ceiling before beginning. Many licensed plastering contractors hold plastering clinics on all the various plastering jobs one can think of. These classes are taught by people who have both experience and knowledge with plastering ceilings and have learned several things that will help you be able to do the job easier and correctly the first time.
Saving Money in the Long Run
While taking a plastering class may cost a bit of money, the money you spend will be worth it when you avoid making costly mistakes. After all, wouldn't you rather take a class that costs you a little bit of money rather than create an even bigger problem that requires a professional to fix? If a professional does have to fix the problem, it will be much more expensive than the class would have been.
This is not intended to discourage you from engaging in a do-it-yourself project. Rather, you should simply consider the idea of getting professionally licensed help before you engage in a project the magnitude of plastering a ceiling. As obviously, you will want to make sure you get it right the first time.
