Life is really fun when we have an organized home. I find that I have more energy to be creative, to take on projects that I’ve been longing to do, and to spend quality time with my family when my house is clean and neat.
Keeping my house picked up used to be a big challenge for me. I had clutter everywhere. It seemed that any time I cleaned out my house, it was messy the next day. I felt hopeless about actually making lasting progress.
But finally, I consulted a home organization expert and everything changed – overnight, it seemed. I was amazed at the time saving techniques that I learned. I cleared out my house in no time and I’ve been enjoying an organized home ever since.
Here are three tips for getting started.
Organizing My Home Tip #1: Get Others Involved – If you’re living with other people, it is incredibly helpful if they will participate in this project with you. They don’t have to do a lot of work, they just need to go through their personal items and get rid of what they don’t need.
I tried to clean out my house by myself many times. Finally, upon the advice of my home organization expert, I asked my husband to get involved. When my husband and I cleared out our house together, we decided that we could part with hundreds of things that I would never have asked him to part with had I been working by myself.
If you don’t live with someone, ask a friend for support. Two heads are better than one.
Organizing My Home Tip #2: Get Rid of Discards Immediately – If you’re actually going to have a garage sale, which I don’t necessarily recommend, have it scheduled for no more than a month away once you begin clearing things out. The last thing you need is to have discards sitting around your house. Then, you’ve got a junk build-up and you won’t see your progress.
When you’re knee-deep in organizing your home, you need to see that you’re making progress. When you see clear spaces, you’ll stay motivated to keep going.
What I did when I finally listened to my expert, was to get rid of discards as soon as I could. Sometimes, I’d take three trips a week to the library to donate used books. Books are heavy and they’re nice to get out of the house.
Organizing My Home Tip #3: Stay Focused – It is very easy to get distracted when you’re organizing your house. You’ll see that you need to paint, organize those boxes of slides, or fix that table leg. Don’t do it yet. Focus on clearing out your house first. Then, you can work on projects. If you find yourself getting sidetracked, remind yourself what you’re goal is. Once you’ve done a great job in clearing out your house, you’ll find that home repairs and projects are many times easier to complete.
And remember: getting expert advice is priceless. Make the most of your time, money, and energy by consulting someone who can help you avoid the pitfalls of home organizing.
