There are thousands of home based business opportunities to choose from. You can choose from franchise opportunities, purchasing an existing business or starting your own business from scratch. You also can choose to start a business where you will need to be in an office everyday, at a store or at home. Every business has its pluses and minuses and every individual has his or her own goals. With that being said, here are the 4 key things that I look for when assessing a home based business:
Startup cost and time: How much money will it take to get the business off the ground? How long will it take for me to recoup my initial investment and show a profit? If you are like me you don’t want to have a large initial investment and not be able to make money or recoup your investment very quickly. Some businesses can take years to earn a dime. I don’t start a business looking to get rich quick but it sure is nice if I can get started right away generating revenue.
Training: Do I know what I am doing? Many people start a business based on what they know. These skills can be from a hobby or maybe something they learned at a previous job. If you are trying to start something new, how long will it take you to learn the skills needed to succeed? Some opportunities will provide you with limited initial training. Are you a problem solver? If not make sure you seek out an opportunity that provides you with unlimited training. Unless you are very patient and have the ability to figure things out on your own, these are the companies you want to seek out. Not everyone is good at all aspects of running a business. Profit potential: Can I make money at this business? Everyone has different goals in life and for their business. Flexibility: A big part of owning a home based business is the ability to choose when you work. Some home businesses are more flexible than others. For example, if you start a home daycare I would expect that your schedule won’t be very flexible. You will have set hours of 7AM – 5PM Monday –Friday or something like that. If you start an internet based business you can literally work anytime you want to. The internet never sleeps. One of the most important things in my life is spending time with my daughter. We eat all our meals together, have some playtime in the afternoon and I’m always there to tuck her in every night. Don’t get me wrong, I still work. I’m on the computer before she gets up, during the day and after she falls asleep. There is no way I could put a price on this flexibility.
