Last night I walked into our family room and my wife’s eyes were glued intently on the TV, before I could say anything she said, “There’s a story coming up that I want to see about the world food shortage.” Wow, ok, there is a good pick me up feel good story of the day. It seems now more than ever, everywhere we turn there is more bad news.
Here is the good, no make that great news, if you can change and adapt with the market, economy and your customers circumstances there is tons of opportunity. We all need to be open to reinventing ourselves and have a desire to learn, change and grow. Especially if you are a home based sales business owner your customers need tools that will help them save money, save time, increase revenue, increase productivity, decrease stress, and help them run their business more effectively. Does anyone out there have a product that can do one or more of those items listed above? Yeah I thought so…
In times like these it is critical to remember five key points:
1. Stop focusing on yourself or how hard things are compared to last year or whenever – let it go and focus on your customer and their needs. How can you deliver massive value to your customer? What are their biggest challenges and struggles they are facing right now, if you don’t know ask them!
2. What is the optimum amount of value you can deliver to your customer? As a home based sales business owner it is paramount to provide a value that is three, four, five how about TEN times what your customers are investing in your product or service. If you can help your customers navigate through challenging times, you will have customers for life.
3. I read a great quote the other day from marketing guru Dan Kennedy: There are some who may be confused by the media focus entirely on the weakness in the economy. Don’t think of these as tough times, should you be so tempted; think of them as TERRIFIC TIMES FOR TOUGH PEOPLE!
4. Desire, you gotta want it!! Remember the story of the young man who was searching for wisdom? He asked the wise old man what he needed to do to gain wisdom, the wise man took him to the river and told him to gaze into the river and there he would find his answer. So the young man looked into the river, then the old wise man grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and held the young mans head under water until the young man nearly passed out. The wise man pulled the young mans head out of the river and said, “When you desire wisdom, as you just desired air, you will be wise. Sorry long story but the point is a good one, you have to want to change, learn and do whatever it takes to find out the needs of your customers and over-deliver value.
5. What you think about you bring about. Honestly if all you think about right now is how much your 401k is down, how much you have lost in the market, layoffs, bailouts, foreclosure etc, it will suck the life right out of you. On the other hand if you focus on solutions and how you can provide increased value to your customer and become a student of the business you are in you will separate yourself from the competition. As home based sales business owners we can stand up and be leaders, people that will be a positive force for good that are focused on solutions and delivering value! What do you think your customers want to hear right now? Do you think they want to sit around and commiserate with you on how terrible everything is or would they love to hear how you can provide solutions and value in these challenging times?
As a home based sales business if you implement these five steps today you will feel better and you will put yourself in a position to rise up above the challenges of today and become an invaluable resource that your customers can’t live without, especially during challenging times!
