Now let’s simply take advertising here. Picture in your minds-eye the last advert you placed in any publication and try to answer these questions to the best of your knowledge. Write your answers down.
- What was the publication?
- Was the advert easy to find?
- Did it stand out from the rest?
- What side of the page was it printed on?
- How many other similar allied advertisers were there?
- Was it in colour or black and white?
- Was your headline compelling?
- Was it a direct response advert?
- Did you have a strong call to action?
- Did you provide a no-brainer guarantee?
- How many enquiries did it generate?
- How many bookings did you get?
- How much ROI was generated?
- What is the expected lifetime value of each customers converted.
I will take a guess here that you probably don’t know the answers to well over half the questions. Don’t worry though, because you are not alone. Most small business owners, and I mean most, haven’t got a clue either! The reason being is that they can’t be bothered to thoroughly test and measure their marketing activities. Money down the drain.
Now this is where you can up your game, and race ahead of your competitors by testing and measuring all of your marketing activities, starting from today.
You could be throwing money down the drain if you can’t be certain what is working and what isn’t. Just because your nearest Face Painting competition or Children’s Entertainer advertises in a certain publication that doesn’t mean that you should become a sheep, and do so too! How do you know that it’s working for them?
I have only listed one marketing activity above, but this also applies to all your other ones, including your website, your press releases, your direct mail, your telephone calls, and your email campaigns. Of course the list is endless, but the point here is test and measure absolutely everything.
