If you are planning to start a home based business, or are already involved in one, there are a few things that everyone should know; it is a business and has to be treated and operated as such. Operating costs come into play with any business.

Contrary to popular belief, home based businesses have similarities to privately owned businesses. You will have to staff your operation, you will have employees (down line), you will have customers, you will be selling products or services and you will have to advertise.

The greatest attributes of a home based business is that you can work it from the comfort of your own home. You can set your own hours, personalize your platform and not have the overhead costs of a privately own businesses. You do not have to stockpile products and can fully function from your computer. The bonus is that you can give yourself unlimited raises and have no cap on your income.

Now lets get down to the bread and butter, as you will find out or already have noticed, people will not be beating down your door to buy your products or services or join in your business opportunity. You may be shocked about this because of course you have the best products, services and business opportunity. The truth of the matter is; they do not know you or your products and that is precisely why you must advertise.

If you just plan on promoting your business by word of mouth and talking to people one on one or at hosting parties, I don't recommend you limit yourself to this, but you will still be using a form of advertising ranging from samples, business cards, cd's, dvd's and even local advertising with brochures and newspaper ads, of which none are free.

Please do not forget that 99% of your companies require you to buy a certain amount of their products and services in order to qualify for pay. Most of these are a monthly auto ship. This is considered a business expense also.

For those of you that will be trying to achieve more than supplemental income and more in the range of replacement income, you will need to do what is mentioned above plus internet advertising. This cost depends on you and your budget and how much money you want to earn. Once you have mastered internet advertising, you will quickly abandon most of the other forms of advertising.

I said all of that to say this, there are costs of operating a home based business. If you were thinking that you were just going to sign up and start-getting checks in the mail or someone else was going to build your business for you, I am afraid you are sadly mistaken and will probably consider quitting before you finish this article, but do not.

Anyone can fund their home based business operating costs, even with the smallest of budgets. Those that can spend more will make more. You must obtain as much knowledge and training as possible and use your creativity.

Many people have started with a low budget and have gone on to create financial freedom. Know this, you will have to invest in your success, it will depend on how serious and driven you are to succeed.

Before attempting to work your business full time on the internet, it would be a great idea to get the knowledge and skill set to do so properly and effectively, to avoid spending more than you are making and driving yourself in debt.

For most of you the question will not be, can I afford a home based business, instead, it will be; can I afford not to learn how to operate it properly so my investment will not go to waste.

In closing, operating a home based business is a serious commitment. There is a very important mindset and skill set involved. You must be patient and dedicated. It will take a little time to get it off the ground. If operated correctly it will bring about incredible joy and financial gain. If not operated properly it will bring stress, disappointment and even debt. You must strongly consider network marketing training to ensure you get off on the right foot. Plan out your budget and make adjustments as your business grows.
