They want to get know if their advertising campaigns are working and how normal person opinion about their products. Large cooperates spend millions of dollars in a year on advertising. Each company works a bit differently, but the basics of online surveys remains the same. We need sign-up for a paid survey site. Where we would enter some basic demographic information (age, gender, etc...), and when they have a survey available in which they are looking for someone who fits our profile, they would send us an invitation to take a survey. The invitation would usually contain a link directly to the survey and the incentive they are offering for us to take the survey. We would qualify for the reward just by participating the survey.

The incentives vary for each company, but generally the incentives take the following forms: cash, gift certificates (especially Amazon gift certificates), merchandise (DVDs, small appliances, electronic devices, cookware, etc...), and rewards.  It's not going to make us filthy rich; it's certainly an easy and fun way to make a few extra bucks. Generally people find the surveys to be enjoyable to participate in and for the time spent, the compensation is pretty good.
