Make Everybody’s Pet your Business

As a staff writer at 'home based business' we regularly answer questions submitted by our members one great topic is making money in the pet industry.

Perhaps you have been thinking of starting up your own business for some time now. Something that enables you to be your own boss. Something that you enjoy, that you will look forward to doing the moment you wake up every morning. Naturally, jobs such as those sound good to be true.

But if you love animals, you may be closer to that job than you think.

There is no reason for you not to start up your own small pet-related business, especially if you realize there are no others like it around you. You may potentially be providing a service everyone has been secretly pining for, and you will be making money and having a good time doing it.

There are numerous pet-related jobs out there – the trick is to think small and build your way up from there. Have you ever walked into a friend’s house and spotted a picture of Mittens on the mantelpiece? Or have you wanted to go on vacation but just could not bear the idea of your adorable dachshund shut away in a kennel wondering where you have gone? Already you have a few ideas and just did not know it. You can easily expand these ideas and apply them to other pet owners. Suddenly you have supply and demand – the great basis for a good business.

Pet Photography

If you have a knack for photography, this may be the right business for you. Anyone and everyone who owns a pet, from lizards to kittens, can utilize your services as a pet photographer. With the newest advances in digital photography, you do not even need to develop pictures in a darkroom – one less thing for you to worry about if you do not know how. A good digital camera can provide vivid, beautiful pictures and save you money on film. Trade that money for a good photo editing software that can allow you to add embellishments if your clients want extra additions such as printed pet names or cute sayings. You can set appointments whenever you like and can either offer to take pictures at the owner’s home or allow them to bring their pets to your studio setup. Understand that many people like themes and embellishments when it comes to their pets, so look into getting various backdrops, props, costumes, and toys. Once your trade is developed enough, you can research other ways of obtaining more profit. Find items you can have photos transferred to, such as mugs, greeting cards, T-shirts, and any other objects people will buy with their pet’s image on it.

Pet Sitting

No one likes to leave their pets in wired cages set inside kennels with dozens of other barking dogs and meowing cats. If there are no friends or family to take them in though, what other options do people have? This is where you come in. Build a business that offers pet sitting services. Though it can be strange for pets when their owners leave and a strange person is left behind, it can be much more comforting to them than to be surrounded by an unfamiliar setting like a kennel. Once your services start growing strong, you can hire other people who enjoy taking care of animals and add them to your pet sitting business, allowing you to take care of multiple clients at once. It all depends upon what you are looking for in your business.

Doggie Day Care

We have all heard the stories of the dog that is left alone in a home or apartment. The owner is away at work or some other event and the dog tears apart shoes, couches, and in general, exhibits destructive behavior. This is because dogs are the opposite of cats; they are social and need to be around people or other dogs. By opening a daily service for people, you are providing them peace of mind (that they will have their shoes intact when they get home) and their dogs are much happier creatures. If you have room in your home for multiple dogs to run, play, and bark (be sure your neighbors do not mind), then you can easily start there. Or you could do a little investing and rent an area, such as a commercial warehouse space, and develop your day care there. With plenty of toys, outdoor space, maybe even a couch or two and some water features, the dogs will have all sorts of time to explore and play until their owners arrive to take them home. Be sure to let owners know this is only a daily service and you do not watch the animals for extended amounts of time – unless you feel you want to transform your day care into an outright doggy hotel and have the means to do so.

These are only three of any number of jobs you could create for the pets and pet owners in your town. If these three are not what you may have had in mind, look up some other ideas such as dog walking, making pet treats, or animal breeding in order to find the right pet enterprise for you.
