When I started my training and technical writing business, it took 18 months to establish enough regular income, requiring me to I worked temporary assignments to keep up the cash flow I needed for my personal expenses.

I found that there were some additional issues, such as only answering the phone/email during business hours, setting aside money for quarterly tax payments, increased tax obligations due to social security contributions.

While getting "tax write offs" for expenses, these were most often items that had no benefit to my personal life or household such as printing, postage, equipment and services. The money is spent whether it goes to taxes or to a vendor.

Another issue is slow to pay clients and bad debt. As much as we don't want to factor this in, you need to be cautious and ready to drop a project or refuse to service client. People that tend to be slow to pay do this to many businesses and are often well spoken, asking for favors and forgiveness. Be ready to toughen up. This is especially hard if you have inventory that has been delivered.

I recommend looking into services like the SBA (Small Busienss Administration - free) and Dun & Bradstreet (paid credit rating and collections).
