Successful Home Businesses and Transition PlanningWe all dream of starting a business that operates out of our homes, becoming successful and growing the business into a something you can pass along to your heirs or selling it at a profit. One of the major difficulties that many small business owners have to deal with is planning the transition from a home operation into a larger business with increased overhead. We will explore a few of these issues in this short article. You have worked hard and turned your operation into a successful home business that is bursting at the seams and you are separately in need of more staff, space and tools to continue to expand your business and provide your services or products to your customers. This is a good problem to have, however these issues require new skills and also will cause additional expense for your business. Planning this transition to a large space also takes time away from your main operation as well which you will need to take into account. Here are a few tips to consider when assessing whether you should embark on the expansion plans and also what things to consider in your transition plan. First of all a new business plan is in order. The basic question you are trying to answer is as follows. Will the increased revenue that you expect to receive as a result of the expansion pay for the increased costs that you will incur. This is a very important question since if you move your successful home business into new digs and hire more people, costs will go up and you had better be able to increase the revenue accordingly. Don not forget to include the cost of the move as well and potential loss of some customers. One of the other major issues is, believe it or not, time. Your time is needed to run the business, maybe you are also part of the production team as well. Taking time to complete a transition plan will take you the owner away from production. Renting a building, arranging for it to be equipped for your needs, moving your operation and getting started all takes more time than most people realize. In fact if you have prepared an estimate of how much time you need to transition your successful home business, this estimate should probably be doubled. Depending on the successful home business that you operate, owners may want to hire someone to assist with the move several months ahead of time. While you concentrate on the move itself and arranging for space, supplies and everything else, your people that you have hired can focus on continuing to operate your business out of your current location. Special attention always needs to be paid to your customers to ensure that they continue to enjoy the same or better service during this time of upheaval. Customers can be fickle and the least roadblock may drive them to other suppliers, so special attention must be focus on them during your transition.
