Tell Me - Are You A Down-Line Robot?

Have you ever felt like a downline robot? Do you ever feel like there is no room for improvement and that you are just expected to follow the leader without trying anything on your own? And have you ever felt that if you do decide to color outside the lines you will be chastised for following the alleged "system"?

Maybe you are brand new to this industry or maybe you may have been in the business for a while; either way, you may be asking yourself some very practical questions. Are you wondering if you are destined to be a downline robot in that you have to go along with everything your upline tells you to do? Well, let’s take a couple minutes and look at that question.

Remember that in this industry as in any other industry, there are people that are very stuck in their ways. These people do things the same way as their predecessors did for no other reason than "That’s the way it has always been done". When looking at the issue of whether or not to "upset the balance" in your upline with an innovative idea and trying something new, don’t get frustrated. Don’t let those who are stuck in their ways frustrate you.

OK, so you’ve decided to take the bull by the horns and run with your new idea and you don’t care what anyone says about it. Good! And what if you do have some real success and blow them out of the water. Now all of a sudden they are all listening and watching your every move. They will want to know what you are doing and how you are doing it. So now, not only are you creating success you are identifying yourself as a leader.

Fundamentally it goes something like this…
It’s natural for each of us who want to succeed in MLM to want to know the "best way" to build our business. People will naturally move towards the things that are proficient and work best. Getting the best reward for the smallest amount of work is the ultimate goal.
So if you are trying new and innovative methods, it all depends on you. Everyone has special strengths, weaknesses, and abilities, and all of this ascertains what will give them the success they are looking for. When the leaders in your MLM have been achieving success with the old school methods, as far as they know, that’s what works.

On the other hand, each of us needs to figure out what techniques work best for us. When it comes to using what works best for you, don’t stress. Just be honest and state that you’ve found an idea that works better for your strengths.

If your upline is not receptive, that’s their problem, and if it really becomes a problem, you might consider looking for an opportunity that doesn’t turn their nose up at new ideas.
Learning from all of our upline members is still very important. However, each of us must ultimately decide how we want to build our business.

There are some key factors to look for however when you are trying to move out of the ‘downline robot’ phase and get away from the old school thinking:

  1. Finding the right market and addressing their needs aka Target market
  2. Branding yourself, not your upline, as a leader
  3. Correct Marketing strategies
  4. Being the hunted instead of the hunter
  5. Offering a product that solves a need
  6. Building a spotless reputation
  7. Building a business and not just a downline

In the end the way we run our own business is completely up to us. Still, there are those who will always know more and have a proven track record. These are the people that we need to look to for advice, knowledge and new ideas on how to build and strengthen our own business. It never hurts to be open to new ideas.
