In almost every case, anything that is advertised as a top home base business is merely marketing trickery or opinion. It's top for the person who is selling the home business. Apart from what is outlined below I am a strong believer in using 'gut feeling', does it feel right to you, and for you?

Even if you had an honest appraisal, which is still entirely subjective, how much use will that be to you? I can think of an excellent business model I came across, however for many people - in fact for most of the people I interviewed - it would be a terrible choice.

Who Is It?

Most of us base our judgements based largely on how much trust and confidence we place in the person giving the advice. This is natural and sensible. However there are confidence tricksters - those who try, and succeed, in tricking our decisions. This industry is unfortunately littered with the less scrupulous amongst us.

Any decent business or company should have its credentials and details accessible to any customers. This offers customer confidence and is central for dealing with any criticism or feedback. What sort of history does the company have? Run a WHOIS check. Someone who is impulsive is less likely to do this than a meticulous person.

Truth v Hard Sell

Most of us are aware of blaring hype, but there are even more subtle yet highly effective means of customer manipulation. People like reviews, forums, blogs etc as they offer the social proof and collective wisdom of others. And there is something to be said for this approach. If there are enough people saying such and such a business is top, in any forum or advert, it becomes 'top' to whoever is reading. Yet the reality is normally heavily biased by these people, who are in fact fishing for commissions by recommending a particular business.

Does the product or idea make sense? Healthy scepticism is natural in most of us, but less so in OPEN temperament types and spontaneous, optimistic types in particular. I have seen no 'top secrets' that are worth paying for, every claim was just a standard professional practice or idea concealed under emotional copywriting.

YOUR Top Home Base Business

This is dependent to a large extent on what temperament you are closest to. For OPEN temperament types, selecting a home business that fits better with your particular characteristics is in my opinion one of the central elements to success. Then, any unique experiences, talents, contacts and of course capital, will play more obvious deciding features for your top choice.

* How much risk is there?
* Is there a structure and step-by-step approach for the actual day-to-day work?
* Will you have to buy back-end products?
* Is there constant and continual education?
* Is there an active support hub?
* Is it value-for-money against comparables?
* Does it help give you have an edge or an angle to beat the competition?

Rather than just relying on someone else's word - it is a safer route if YOU can find a business that: feels right to you, you can financially start-up without borrowing, and that can satisfy the above criteria - then it can truly be called a top home base business, for you.
