A Short History on Bayeux Tapestry

Bayeux tapestries are a special kind of historic tapestry portraying the famous scenes of the commemoration of the Battle of Hastings. If we talk about the original Bayeux tapestry, it measures 20 inches by 230 feet. This huge tapestry, with Latin annotations, depicts the scenes of the Battle of Hastings that happened in 1066. Today, it is preserved in a museum in Bayeux, France.
Delving into the past, Bayeux tapestries were first commissioned and created in France. Its origin, perhaps, is the most controversial subject of all time. Many claim that Queen Matilda, William the Conqueror's wife, was the one who commissioned it. On the other hand, a few experts claim that it was Bishop Odo, the half brother of William the Conqueror, who commissioned it. Whatever may be the controversy; Bayeux tapestries have survived the ages and are still very popular.
Bayeux tapestries tell the story of the Norman conquest of England. According to the story, one of the combatants was Anglo-Saxon English led by Harold Godwinson. This form of Bayeux tapestry was rediscovered in the late 17th century and was traditionally displayed once a year at the Feast of the Relics. Later, it was published in the 1730s by Bernard de Montfaucon.
Seeing its popularity, many replicas of the original Bayeux tapestry are made. Tapestries like the D-day Tapestry were inspired by it. Bayeux tapestries are a unique form of art that flourished in full strength in Ancient Greece. It is a form of literary expression that has now actually spread to countries like France, England, Netherlands, and Belgium.
When compared with other tapestries, Bayeux tapestries are regarded as one of the most artistic and ancient forms of tapestries. These characterize complex designs and fine finishing and are a masterpiece of art forms. Bayeux tapestries are popular worldwide and are displayed in public buildings and museums all around the world. These are also precious heirlooms, inherited and preserved in private collections.
The typical Bayeux tapestry is woven out of fine quality materials such as cotton, silk, wool, and linen. These fabrics are combined to produce the best tapestries.
